Are you sure that Intel CPU is the perfect choice for tablets? As the exact CPU type is not disclosed yet, and as one can judge indirectly, this appears to be one of the Atom 2x00 series - quite battery-hungry as compared to ARMs. Coupled with a relatively small battrery (4300 mAh vs the nearest competitors' 6000 thru 7500 mAh), this will bind the user to a power socket pretty soon. (Especially after the battery degrades in a few monts of usage - and it is not replaceable!) Modern ARM CPUs do have sufficient power not only for tablets but even for netbooks.

I can bet that jolla tablet will shil some of those new intel atom 35x0 cpus and assuming that Jolla won't overclock or underclock them I would say it will be 3560 atom. Just check out the specs. It' s combined with pretty badass graphics- pvr g6430.

Regardless of which processor is used, it would be nice to have a better battery for the tablet.

I'd prefer Intel over ARM because Intel in general are more open. Try getting open drivers for ARM SoCs - it's a nightmare.

Exactly Intel SOCs are fully open source, including the video ( GPU ) driver. Besides that they're pretty cheap these days.

Intel has the best open source support out there and it's so much easier to deal with than a custom ARM SOC. Since Jolla isn't using Android stuff but GNU/Linux it's much easier for them so deal with an Intel SOC. Let's not forget that their ARM phone is using libhybris as far as I know which is needed to deal with binary Android crap.

Jolla won't be using Intel open driver on the tablet - that's confirmed. They'll be using Intel Android GPU blob with libhybris to enable glibc Linux stack (i.e. it means Android kernel, not stock Linux kernel).

That said, since the hardware has open drivers, one can try producing an adaptation using Intel's KMS / Mesa driver and stock kernel. According to @Stskeeps it's not performant enough though, but he was very scarce on details of what exactly isn't good enough there. For the summary, see this.

I do hope they just use GNU Linux and Mesa but if they don't I'm just going to try and hack something myself.

Intel chips lately are comparable to ARM in terms of performance and battery life. Jolla tablet will probably have Atom Z3560, which sounds very good. Nokia N1 is going for Atom Z3580 AFAIK.

I suspect it is far easier to get detailed specs on an Intel Atom than a chinese clone. Also the Intel device is much less of a moving target and more predictable. Look at what supposedly killed off several previous attempts at crowdfunded Linux tablets - the difficulty of getting access to detailed information for drivers etc and the fact that these devices are not on the market long enough to develop new open source firm/software.

Because hopefully the GFX/Wifi driver is also Intel that means more open core linux drivers.

Because intel is currently selling their processors with zero margin to get into the tablet/smartphone market again. They will do this atleast well into 2015. Thats why the jolla tablet can be so cheap. Its good :)

Well, using Atom 3xxx series probably makes a difference... open drivers are surely a big plus. Yet the uncertainity about which drivers and which kernel are actualy used makes things even more complicated...

Don't forget Intel is more supportive of open source sinc they also support Tizen with Samsung (spit) and this experience should help.
