Hello!

I'm considering buying the Jolla phone. It's already been out for two years. Is there an official position on how long it will be supported with security and/or software updates? If not a position, then perhaps a hint?

I think this question is very important. I know a bunch of people who have considered buying Jolla, but some of them have been afraid of buying a device which is "so old". They know what happens to an apple after couple of years...

They will be focusing on Sailfish OS and they will be outsourcing their next phones: https://cdn.jolla.com/wp-content/uploads/bsk-pdf-manager/53_JOLLA_COMPANY_STRUCTURE_JULY2015_FINAL.PDF

@JollaFan922 this has nothing to do with the question. SailfishOS 2.0 will be out for our jollas in the next weeks, so looking back to 18 months of SaiflishOS 1.x updates and security fixes, you can be sure support will last at least to the final version of SailfishOS 2.x. If it takes another 18 months for SailfishOS 3.0 to come, this would be an amazing support period of 3 years. And if the specs allow it, I'm sure even SailfishOS 3.0 will be available for our already aged jolla.

@JollaFan922 don't think too much about it. Jolla always listened to the community, actually I think 95% of SailfishOS user are owning a Jolla smartphone. Yes there are plans for a Jolla Smartphone from Intex, but rumors are saying with similar specs as Jolla Phone. I think SailfishOS will get a big player in future if they are going on with security and privacy feature but I don't think that everybody is going to buy a Intex smartphone, most Users are very well perfoming with Jolla Phone (including me). I'm not afraid of trying new things and having a phone which is not fully developed. I really enjoy waiting for new releases every month or at least every two months and trying the features, therefore I'm on the early adopters list, trying the new build before and helping to fix bugs. If you don't want to, you can install the latest official releases without problems. I think support for Jolla smartphone will only end if the limited RAM (1GB) extended with ZRam is not enough anymore to fullfill the requirements for the latest release. Also I think Jolla was working on a new phone, which will maybe be released under Jolla Mobile Oy, the new device conpany.

The next release after 1.1.7 will bring the new UI to Jolla phones. So, I can confirm that there are no plans yet to stop support for the phone.

Do you mean 2.0 release maybe? I have 1.1.7.24 (EP), and the interface seems to be identical to previous release.

1.1.7 does not have the new UI. The one _after_ will.

Still, this is not an answer to the question, because there's no official statement regarding the support period of the phone. I don't understand why the question has been closed.

I'm sorry but it is not clear to me what your role is. I see that you're a moderator but is this the official answer to my question, from the company?

JollaFan922 ( 2015-07-26 03:04:38 +0200 )edit

I'm sorry that my answer is insufficient to rest your concerns though I work for Jolla. In any case, I have provided you with the information I know, i.e the Jolla1 phones will continue to receive software upgrades and there are no plans made internally to stop supporting them yet.

In terms of spare parts the support ended already. Or it never begun.

I believe this is a very valid consumer concern and Jolla should - as a serious company - provide some precise information on this. That said, given it's basically the development device of many; I guess it will always be supported in one way or another...or at least that's in my hopes :)

At the moment there are at least no official plans to not support phone further, Sailfish OS 2.0 will come to the jolla phone, so I think the compability should last a few years further...

I wish that this is true. I just found a PDF on the Jolla website (left it as a comment on my question) saying that they plan to focus on Sailfish OS and allow other companies manufacture phones to run on. If this happens and we have another phone in the following months, there is no guarantee that Sailfish OS 2.0 will run on the current phone. I'll sent them a question and see if we can get an official statement on this one.

It is confirmed, very officially, that we will see SailfishOS 2.0 on our jolla phones. The first users will see it within a few weeks from now, given that they have opted-in for the pre-release updates.

i have my jolla since 8 months there were several updates in this period and none made my jolla slower it just became better my expectation is at least one more year on updates so software does not worry me. rather hardware support after the warranty period

I had read hardware support AFTER the warranty period several times... to make it clear Jolla is an unline device that is not sold in every shopping center. It is more like an unlike wristwatch or a limited series car. You wont find services around the world, and replacement part supply is second to none, and if it break after warranty Your best bet is to buy again. But think about it, most people throw away their broken phone and buy a new one even if it was more expensive than Jolla. Last thought: Jolla is not expensive .. look at the market.

since it is their first product, i think it has a status like a reference platform (sort of). I see no reason why it should be not further supported. So I hope that as long as there is a crew, it will sail ;-)

I think, that the support will be pretty long. And Jolla doesn't act like other giants - every 6 months new and overpriced flagship with 18 months support, and bunch of a budget devices (MediaTek based?) without a massive support. In fact, that action, mentioned above, requires a massive funding.
