If I issue the command 'du -h --max-depth=1 .vault/.git/' I get a 4.5 GB used by ./vault/.git/blobs

Wouldn't it be nice if I could delete those files to save precious space in my internal memory?

They are your backup files. Create an external backup and it will be safe to remove your backups.
