Version 1.1.6.x

Recently I've gone a while since using the Media Player to listen to music whilst out and about, so I'm not sure when this will have started, but the last two times I've used it I've been unable to unlock the phone as the screen has become completely unresponsive. It doesn't respond to double-tap, but will switch on with the power button. However, I can't swipe off the lock screen. Pulling the headphone plug out stops play-back but does not help in unlocking. The only way to resolve it, seems to be to restart.

The first time I rebooted straight away as I needed my phone, but the second I left it a good twenty minutes or so, with no change. I did look to try and connect to it via SSH but I'd turned wifi off and the default USB connectivity is charge only. If I get some opportunitly, I'll try and reproduce it with connectivity enable and see if I can see any other details. Any suggestions of things to look would be useful (I'll start with top and mcetool).

The issue doesn't occur if I use the player and don't let the screen blank (or at least for more than a second or two).

EDIT: The issue didn't occur using the player for about 2-3 minutes with the screen locked. Should be able to do a proper test later today.

EDIT2: Have used the media player twice now, for periods similar to the times that caused the hang, and both times it didn't occur. So seems to be an intermittent issue.

Edit3 (2015-08-12): I've used the media player in similar situations to the two with the issue many times now, and it's still not re-occurred.

I did a search using Media Player and didn't see an issue like this, if it occurs with other applications as well, I may have missed

Hi. How You are listening music? if through your Hi-Fi system or active amplifier, than it is a usual occourance for many devices, if the stereo system is ungrounded.

this happened to me the other day whilst using my own music-player app, I was using pre-release version 1.1.7.24 at the time.

No lockscreen patches, just normal.

Hi, thanks for the response. No, it's through my headphones. Sorry, I didn't make more clear.

Thanks for that, so it might not be the player specifically? Could it be pulseaudio? Just to add I don't have any lock screen patches, either.

both jolla-media and my own use the QtMultimedia stack, so it could be something in there.

It only happened the once for me and hasn't reoccurred, and i use my jolla for music every day.

If the proximity sensor is covered, double tap detection is disabled. So proximity sensor stuck to covered position due to sweat/dirt/etc could cause the "It doesn't respond to double-tap, but will switch on with the power button" -part.

Depending on settings proximity sensor state can also be used for blocking touch input, so misbehaving sensor could cause "However, I can't swipe off the lock screen" -part. Note that if this blocking happens, it is done only immediately after powering up the display -> if touch works for a while / any part of the ui reacts (like global side swipes might work, but app controls do not) it is some other issue.

To confirm/rule out proximity sensor related issues you could try to:

  1. Wipe the sensor area clean (top right corner of the display, where power button is)
  2. Do triple-powerkey-press which makes a fake proximity sensor uncovered event (depending on display state there will be some side effects, since it does get interpreted as double-press + single-press too, so this is most useful when display stays off while there is alarm or call and normal power key presses are reserved for snoozing alarms / silencing ring tones).
  3. Enable debug led pattern for touch blocking via running "mcetool --enable-led-pattern=PatternTouchInputBlocked" from shell. When display is on and touch input is blocked due to proximity sensor / other reasons the led will blink rapidly in blue color. To test how it looks like: Turn display off, put a finger on screen and turn display on via power key.

Thank you for this. I'll try that next time it occurs.

However, I don't think it is the issue, as it occurred once while in its normal case, and it has never happened in that case while the media player wasn't being used. That said, the two instances were close enough that it may have been the same mark, so I'll not rule it out yet.

I should have the opportunities to test it more often this week.

Not sure if this should go in the OP, but all attempts to reproduce it today have, so far, failed. This has involved exactly the same usage and play list as at least one previous hang.

@chris.adams it could be related. It's hard to tell as I can't get past the lock screen. I guess it depends on if the lock screen is a separate application or not.

Incidentally, I still didn't get a chance to try and reproduce this over the weekend, but should get few goes this week.

Still not had this while playing media, but did get similar behaviour while out and about. Needed to call someone urgently and forgot about the proximity sensor so rebooted (sorry).

I also thought I was getting similar behaviour again, and a wipe of the screen fixed it. Next time I'll make sure the behaviour is real before trying the wipe. It's not like I use it in dirty environments though.

Incidentally I'm on 1.1.7.28 now.

I've not seen this again, and we're now several versions further on. Unless anyone else sees this, I think it's pretty safe to close this?
