A phone without sockets? [answered]

Reading about the new 24 and 27 inch displays with built in qi chargers got me wondering. A phone without sockets is a possibility now....but would it be a good idea?

Qi for power. Bluetooth for audio. Wifi for file transfer. Miracast for external display.

Waterproof.

would it still have an internal microphone and speaker? if so then its going to need holes of some kind, as well as the obligatory SIM card socket.

There are rumours about cardless SIM.

sounds good to me but accessories could cost a lot.

It's an interesting idea but wireless charging is not efficient at all ...

Somehow MacBook Air with only WiFi was the first example of its kind and the IPad with no usb more or less the second. As we all know it is nice, but only when working in a limited environment. So I would say that it needs a huge amount of Development on the rest of the world that you would like to connect to your phone...

Personally, I find this a VERY bad idea.

  • Wireless communications are prone to background EM noise. Want to connect your phone to an industrial computer installed in a production facility? Too bad, the noise produced by machinery (which would not be a serious problem if you could just use a cable) jams all wireless communications for good.
  • Wireless communications are prone to eavesdropping. Don't you just love the idea of every single byte of your private data floating in the air for anyone to pick up? The only thing which (sometimes) differentiates this from simply publishing your data is an optional encryption layer, which from time to time royally fail its users (WEP anyone?..)
  • Wireless communications are downright forbidden at some places (planes being the UrExample)
  • Wireless communications are hazardous, no matter what the signal power is
  • Wireless communications are simply absent in a lot of places where you would want to connect your phone. See this post for example: OP asks how to connect his phone via USB because MTP does not work properly, and a crowd of people tells him to just use SSHFS over WiFi instead. Well guess what: he can't connect his phone to WiFi at work, so his only option is USB. You suggest to remove even this option.

While I generally agree with your response, I hope you do know the difference between ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. This may help in preventing FUD spread.

I wonder how someone being so afraid of "radiation" would use a mobile phone at all. And connecting a pbone in an industrial environment is certainly a very exotic requirement of a handful of users. I am pretty sure that we will see fully encapsulated devices without any mechanical connectors in the not too distant future. Let's hope some will run SF!

@Stefanix: I am not "afraid" of anything, I'm just a rational person. If on one side of the scale you have a next-to-zero improvement of ease-of-use, and on the other side you have even a slightest chance of health hazard, then the latter, of course, overweights the former. I use a mobile phone when I can't use wired network, because then on the first side of the scale there is a "internet/no internet" choice, and that does overweight the (admittedly small) chance of damage. Why people are so insistent in using wireless communications when they clearly don't have to is beyond my comprehension. It's almost like using WiFi instead of USB magically makes you a more progressive person. No it doesn't. Just spend one petty second of your time on plugging the cord into your phone and be done with it.

There is such thing as "radio environment contamination". There are lots of public places where the air is oversaturated with wireless transmissions and you simply can't squeeze your connection in.

As @r0kk3rz already pointed out, there are loads and loads (Sony being just the most popular example) of perfectly waterproof phones which are not crippled by removal of physical connectors. I respect your opinion, but mine is that that ain't gonna happen.
