Hi guys.

Does anyone know of a way or a app on the Jolla store or Warehouse, that can turn the phone into a wifi booster. I.e. connecting to a wifi network and using your phone as a hotspot for that wifi network. I know you can tether your phone for 3G but can you tether your phone for wifi?

Thanks guys.

It's already built into the device. I've tried it, it works. Here's how I did it;

First off, I disabled my providers internet (3G) connection and then enabled WiFi connection (I use BTOpenzone's WiFi service to connect to the internet, I have to open a VPN landing page to sign into the BT network), then on the Jolla, I went to Settings - System - Internet Sharing / WLAN hotspot (Share device's mobile connection by creating a WLAN network others can join), note the password for the WLAN hotspot on Jolla, enter that password when asked on your computer/tablet/whatever and you're off!, well, I am.

I posted this answer using the connection! :)

To clarify; I turned off my 3G connection to make sure I was only connecting via wifi.

Easy Steps;

  1. Turn on WiFi
  2. connect to your favourite wifi access point
  3. go to Settings / System / Internet Sharing
  4. Tap on WLAN hotspot to start it (You can change the name of the network from Jolla to 'whatever SSID', same goes for the password (tapping on abc reveals the default password), these changes must be made before starting the WLAN hotspot).
  5. On any other wifi enabled device, look for your newly created network SSID, connect and enter the password.

It's well! How about what would add a feature that makes Jolla device as a simple Wi-Fi repeater of home/office Wi-Fi router without VPN? As I understood, it's only software support missing.

I tried the same, but although I had mobile data disabled a pop-up on top of the screen notified my that a 3g connection was established as soon as I enabled internet sharing. so it seems to use mobile data even it is (and the switch stays) disabled :/

@till - that's a little odd. I deliberately checked my network data counters and sure enough, after setting them to zero, they stayed at zero with 3g/internet turned off. Not sure why others are having the opposite problem.
