Can't close apps in multitasker

quite often long pressing a card in the multitasker does not lead to showing the x symbol for closing apps

It's not an inadvertent cover action as a long press anywhere on the home screen (though not the 4 application icons) should bring the task killer up. Sadly I don't remember the resolution but I suspect I just rebooted the phone.
