Goal

The goal is to find the most attractive specs for the successor to JP-1301. Not a bunch of alternatives but one single set of specs. You, the users, will decide what you want.

Compare again?

2015-12-30 - Have a look at the review of Smartisan T2. The minimalism of that phone would be better complimented by SailfishOS, wouldn't it? But is it what we want for Jolla J2? (Yes, the question is a bit troll-ish but there's a good reason for that).

2015-11-07 The Rush before Slush - Slush 2015 starts in just a couple of days. Don't just sit there anxiously waiting for Jolla news. Distract your head and put it to good use here instead. Time waits for noone.

2015-11-07 - The Meizu M2 has similar hardware to the specs below. Compare with that phone and adjust your suggestions if necessary.

2015-09-18 - OtherHalf or not? J2 could use the OtherHalf system. Would that be a good idea or not? The difference in cost is probably tiny.

2015-09-16 - What about the camera? Any suggestions for good camera modules?
Moved SoC to separate category.

2015-09-08 - The hunt for an opensource SoC begins
Updated specs with some suggested parameters. Feel free to disagree.

2015-08-31 - I notice that some have started liking comments. More of that, please. Consider it a primitive way of voting. ...or at least a way of showing your preferences.

2015-08-28 - Let's go. Compare with the specs of the current Jolla Phone. Votes for the question itself will show to Jolla how important the users of this forum think the J2 is. (As this is a wiki I won't get any karma points for votes). Vote for the categories that you think are the most important. (I get no points for those either).

I hate to be a show stopper, but isn't this a dupe?

jollailija ( 2015-08-28 21:18:05 +0300 )edit

No, this one is intended to gather a set of specifications, although I don't still get how @vattuvarg wants us to provide and vote them.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo Me neither. There are a ton of threads about "JP2" that have specs, so I don't see how this one is different.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo - There are too many options to create a voting system. This is a wiki so feel free to edit the answers.

You could have commented or voted on all of the above specs in their respective category instead of posting as an answer. At a quickl look, it seems like all of your suggestions have been mentioned before. We are working towards the goal of just one set of specs. Adding combinations, like you've done above, is counter-productive.

Keep TOH concept, but replace I2C with (or preferable add) "internal" USB or at least SPI for more speed.

  • There are many good ideas to customize the Jolla phone.
  • Different people value different things. So the ideas are diverse.
  • It doesn't make much sense to try to fit everything into a "one size fits all" product.
  • Still, they are great and valuable ideas.

Not being limited to the original hardware design and software is what really makes the Jolla phone different.

I2C is a good and proven bus. It is mainly designed for working with sensors and well supported by a number of MCUs and I think that's what the designers of the J1 had in mind.

But (as always) it appears that the customer wants more, as soon as you show the first samples :)

USB or SPI can provide the speed needed, so third party providers could build more of the TOHs the customers want.

Just the Brain

One solution for creating the next generation of Jolla phone would be to create only the brain of the phone. The idea is to cooperate with Puzzlephone and use their spine (display) and heart (battery) modules to create a modular phone adapted to the needs and wishes of sailfish OS users. One important factor that comes to mind is how open the firmware is...

By using Puzzlephone parts the process of creating the next Jolla phone could be simplified. Having two (or more) companies cooperate on a standard would also increase acceptance.

You can read more about PuzzlePhone at http://www.puzzlephone.com/

Personally I would love to see a Nokia clearblack spine to go with the PuzzlePhone heart and Jolla brain.

I think that a very good Jolla 2 could be the Fairphone 2: modular, open and ethical committed. The only thing that are not so good is the price.

I am waiting for my Fairphone 2 nr 6620

Sailfish OS brainmodule for PuzzlePhone could be a nice collaboration between Jolla and PuzzlePhone.

OtherHalf solutions belong to another thread, I'm afraid. (Similar solutions have been suggested in other threads before but the i2c bus is simply too slow. The only option would be to connect via Wi-Fi).

Welcome to TJC, btw.

no TOH

  • thinner case instead otherhalf
  • free NFC to eased multiple devices connection use
  • more space for externel devices (at least 2 microSD, for ex. 1 internal and 1 external with slot)
  • waterresistant case for underwater pictureing
  • less edge-wide; larger screen

Too much power i think is not necessary. This Jolla need to support TOH because there are like me that have spent over 100€ only for covers. Battery. We need a battery that kill other phones, 2 days or more would be very appreciated. Quad core phone SoC i think can be honest with 3 gb of ram. A good software can have better low power hardware, less watt and better software ;-)

Solar discret energy and Lifi Communication? Device get power from a thin skin over the display. Would delay the battery power off. And provide some communication facilities through light environment.

Or something that Exeger provides, i.e. using both sunlight and artificial light for charging consumer electronics.

nick75 ( 2015-09-17 13:49:19 +0300 )edit

exeger and sunpartner seems to be concurent on the segment. don't know if they work on the same consortium...

cemoi71 ( 2015-09-17 14:02:19 +0300 )edit

their product seem to have same characteristics

cemoi71 ( 2015-09-17 14:10:14 +0300 )edit

Indeed Exeger and Sunpartner seem to be competitors, however LiFi from Sunpartner is much cooler than "just" charging... Nevertheless, good to have options.

I would like the best possible capability for using the device offline to reduce the number of devices I need to carry when hiking. This means maximum amount of RAM and SD and USB Otg capability as well as a proper compass (not just GPS). The camera should be the best possible - see the latest Sony phones, but I see no need for a front camera. The biggest issue which we all ask for is offline maps. My personal requirement is to allow offline use of walking maps. In the UK these are produced by Ordnance Survey and then routable versions are produced from them by Garmin/HERE and other companies. There is no comparable map data available and the Open Mapping is useless. It seems that Ordnance Survey work with the GPS device and software companies directly and it would be nice but highly unlikely that anything could be built specifically for Sailfish, but there are Android and Iphone versions available.
