WhatsApp stalls when background services allowed

In Björnträsket 1.1.7.28 there is a new setting - Settings - Apps - WhatsApp - Allow application background services to start on bootup. Wonderful! But alas, when enabled the opposite happens. WhatsApp will stall. New messages are not being delivered (clock being shown), others cannot see me as being online. Also inspecting my own status will give a turning circle for ever.
After disabling the background services, WhatsApp is running fine.
After installing 1.1.7.28 WhatsApp was grey in Settings - Apps. I uninstalled and installed again, and the setting became available. That is the current situation with the abovementioned problem.
Everything is fine for me.
