Sailfish OS 2.0 - Bring back screenlock when swiping from top at homescreen! (Or at least optional)

So I upgraded to pre-2.0 version (1.1.9.27) and I just find out that you can't directly lock the phone when you're swiping from top at the homescreen. It brings up some Profiles (AKA Ambiance) menu, where you can click on a lock icon to lock the screen. I really loved the lock the screen by "closing the home screen". But this new update just isn't right for people like me....

If you guys going to change things like this, please at least give us an option to "Directly lock the screen when swiping from top at the home screen".

It's pretty good. Not sure if swiping with the same short distance from the bottom of the screen can be fixed. So it's a tiny "bug".

While I appreciate the patch, I don't think this is the answer, but these patches are workarounds. Frankly, I couldn't care less about the whole ambiance-thing (or profiles, for that matter). Since I'm using a smartwatch, I feel there's even less need for it, as the phone is automatically on silent anyway. Yet the Ambiance-selector got a (annoyingly) prominent place in the OS, blocking features which I did use very often.

@Fuzzillogic The patch is here to ease the hassle while the developers implement and push out a solution, since this is obviously a stumbling-stone and the total demand is clearly shown as more than 400 up-votes this is inevitable. An option to select preferred behavior is necessary.

Why not have the ambiance switcher on the right or left of the home screen? Now there's the same notification area on both sides, which I think is a waste of swipable directions.

<rant> I've been using the new top-swipe menu for this afternoon and evening. I must admit, that it makes me almost furious. A function (set phone to sleep) that used to be one gesture (top-swipe) is now gone. Instead we now have an extra menu where you have to tap an item. To be honest, it really broke my usage pattern when putting the phone quickly away. One extra tap is enough to break something that used to be just one fluid motion. Operating the phone with gestures just took a step backwards and that is quite disappointing. </rant>

It was never just one swipe to lock, unless you were in the home screen, lock screen or app list.

From an open app it was a swipe from the side into a quarter-loop and down from the top. One fluid motion. No tapping.

Idea.

When you remove all your favorite ambiences from ambiences-menu, instant screenlock with swipe turn on. There isn't reason for empty menu with only lock button.

Jolla could add something like when you swipe from top only just enough to show (part of) the lock icon, it would lock the phone, but if you swipe more to show even part of the ambience icons, it would open the full menu like now.

Exactly, and logical solution. And when you move thumb a little back up, lock gets cancelled.

This whole ambiance menu could function like pulley down menu (pull down and release over option) but then with bigger icons / areas. Why we have to tell Jolla all that?

The ambiance menu functioning like pulley menu would be good in the sense of being consistent.

However, to lock your phone you would then have to "swipe" somewhere between 5 and 15 mm. Less and your swipe gets canceled, more and you did nothing but leave the menu open. That level of precision is acceptable for app pulley menus because, your are concentrating on what is on the screen while you are using them. When you are locking your phone, you don't want to have to concentrate on it any more. That's what made the old UI brilliant.

Ambience menu items are bigger than normal pulley menus and there could be haptic feedback when you swipe too much (menu would be left open) so you can swipe back up for locking the phone even without watching it.

For people who are never or rarely switching themes, the new behavior for screen lock and power-off requires one unnecessary tap too much.

It shouldn't be that hard to make it configurable from the settings (in "gestures") to either allow ambiance switching or do the action right away.

don't know if i should post it as an answer... but i must say the following:

i like it. It is not that big a deal! I've been using new version for couple of days now, and got used to it very quickly! I must say that I did love the old way, but the new way is just fine. So what if it's adding one more click. it's not like you do it constanly all day long. Why you guys just don't give it a trial period.

Besides i really like the way where ambiences are going (like adding actions to them). so they are becoming more like a profiles. And i can see that some day i will turn on "Work" profile and will connect me to my openvpn network and turn on work mail account, and launch job related apps. And it will be really convinient to do this with a swipe from the top of the screen!!

Before this comes true and said extended functionality is provided, would we rather like to see these abilities grow in the system, or do we want to stick to the old way things are done until all of that matures?

I prefer to see things grow, because that way we can at least ensure that patches from patchmanager can really adapt to the new suggestions in time.

@MoritzJT but they might already have something in pipeline. In 2-3 updates may be. Who knows. And i'm already thinking of creating a patch which will extend ambience functionality to some extant. And probably so do some other developers.

Sure it's just one click more, but each time. And for an (IMHO) useless thing, did you change the ambience each time you lock the screen ? Who purpose this idea ? What's going wrong with this guy ?

There is a new patch in Openrepos: Patch: Custom Power Menu with Swipe to Lock. It has more features than Patch: Restore swipe to lock and also adapts the poweroff-function!

Timer. If you release the finger tap in a given time, the screen will be locked or the device will be shutdown
You can also add shortcuts for reboot, restart homescreen, screenshot etc.
Everything configurable via Settings-app

I just tested it, works like a charm. Uninstall the other patch, before applying this one!
