Sailfish 2.0 on Nexus 5

Hey guys,

I was wondering if the port of Sailfish OS that we saw on MWC 2015 is made officially by Jolla or by the (IRC) porter community.

Will it also be released when 2.0 is available for the Jolla Phone? And if it's made by Jolla can we expect regular updates for it? I'm not asking for an update every month like for the Jolla Phone, just if there will be more updates than for the (only?) official port for the Nexus 4. Or wool there never be other official ports and the one for Nexus 4 was just a proof of concept?

Since Jolla split into a software and a hardware company I could imagine that the one banned first has more resources to maintain more devices.

Hope this is no duplicate, couldn't find something related.

Have a nice day, Joshinho

I don't think there are any official ports of Sailfish OS for non Jolla devices. You can see the status of the unofficial ports in https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris Some ports even have install instructions advanced users / hackers can follow to try out Sailfish OS on different HW platforms.

I know about the libhybris and already installed SFOS on my Nexus 4. I always thought that the "Early Adopters"-versions of SFOS for the Nexus 4, which were distributed through the developer mailing list first I think, were made by Jolla. Are those also by unofficial porters?

You can find the email I refer to quoted in this blog post http://www.jollausers.com/2014/03/sailfish-os-early-adopters-have-got-their-email-to-go-crazy/

@Joshinho the nexus 4/5 ports are semi official, as a large part of the work was done by @sledges who is a jolla employee.

That said none of the ports are considered 'officially supported' as such, and don't get OTA updates and android support.

Oh okay, didn't know that! Thanks for clarification :)

@r0kk3rz: work is being done to make OTA updates possible, at least.

So there is a port of Sailfish OS 2.0 for the Nexus available made by the community. It also changed from Alpha to Beta stage. OTA should work, too. You can download it below:

https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/Install_SailfishOS_for_hammerhead

Haven't tried it myself, so any feedback would bw nice :) Is it stable enough as a daily driver?

Have a nice day, Joshinho

I just saw that http://images.devaamo.fi/sfe/hammerhead/beta5/ shows that Sailfish 2 is now available for download. But the steps provided in https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/Install_SailfishOS_for_hammerhead still refers to the old CynogenMod project, which has now transitioned to LineageOS. Any chance the developers would like to update the wiki so we can properly try out the latest version?

Ahoy! I did it over the last weekend. Because I was a little bit "bemused" of the tutorials above or this and I was not succeed with last CyanogenMod (M12) therefore I tried to combine some how-tos.

Now I have clear Android 5.1.1 and SFOS 1.1.9.28 together on multiboot and I am happy! :)

The only thing I miss is the support of the Android app. I need use only 2 Android apps (WhatsApp and Waze) every day and that's why I can not use the Nexus 5 as my only phone. :( Some hint how to install .apk on Sailfish OS for Nexus 5 image?

Now I know. I googled and read some discussions right now. Sad. :(

But you can install some Android games if I got that right, can't you? I didn't get why games work but other apps don't since I have no idea of the technical background.

Can someone try to explain it in a noob way? Does it mean that in the (far) future we might have full Android support like on original Jolla devices?

Long story short it doesn't have Dalvik, which is the virtual machine android apps use. Why can you play games? because most games don't use Dalvik and instead run 'natively' which we can do through apkenv.

There are a number of different efforts trying to solve this issue, from allowing people to licence alien-dalvik, to building their own Dalvik virtual machine, so we will see it solved at some point in the future I think.

Thank you for the explanation. It's a "stupid" situation. For the Waze I can reboot into Android (it is not comfortable, but it is the way), but the Whatsapp I need use a whole day and ... "using the native version might not be the best idea, unfortunately.". :(
