Update on 2015-09-24: 1.1.9.28 will be rolled out to all our users today. The update process will take a long time to complete (especially the file system optimizations), please be patient.

During this year, we've been working non-stop on iterating prototypes of UI concepts and testing out different possibilities to uplift the Sailfish OS user experience. We are finally ready to introduce the new UI and share the joy of using the reborn Sailfish OS 2.0 user experience with you. This release is especially dear to us as we have also reached the milestone of platform scalability to support multiple devices.

We are happy to announce the 1.1.9 release to our dear users. Thank you for your continued support and patience all through these months where the introduction of new features have taken a back seat.

Usability changes w.r.t 1.1.7

The main driver for the new UI changes has been to improve the existing functionality while easing the learning curve for new users. We hope this list of changes gives you an insight on the usability changes compared to the old UI framework.

  • No more limitation of having only 9 open apps visible in Home, you can freely scroll to view all open apps
  • The first row of app launcher icons is no longer visible in the homescreen. The app launcher is now accessible from anywhere in the UI with a swipe up gesture from the bottom edge.
  • Open apps remain in the order they were launched in Home. Hence the last opened apps appear in the end of the grid. Now you can also drag to rearrange the apps in housekeeping mode. This change gives you the control to place the open apps in the order you prefer.
  • You will see dimmed app covers when they are closed due to low memory. This way, you can continue to access/relaunch the app from Home.
  • Active cover actions are now tappable. Swipe gestures are now reserved for view navigation in the homescreen
  • Active cover actions limited to one for Browser, Phone, Clock and Mail apps.
  • Enable silent mode by swiping from top edge of the screen and activating Silent ambience
  • Turn off all system sounds by long press on volume down key
  • Presence settings has moved from Events pulley menu to Settings > System > Presence.
  • Manage ambiences under Settings > System > Ambiences, moved from Gallery app. Read more.
  • Feeds support for Facebook and Twitter accounts are temporarily unavailable (will be re-introduced in the next release)
  • SMS and IM notifications use the same icon now
  • Faster flicking speed across the platform
  • Old default ambiences will be removed on upgrade.

Upgrading your device

Upgrade path through 1.1.7.28 for early access users

As the issue update to 1.1.7 hang at 95 - 99% remains open, we've enabled persistent logs during software upgrade process in 1.1.7.28. Should this issue reoccur while upgrading to 1.1.9, you will be able to retrieve logs from the affected devices to assist the debugging (they are in /var/log/systemupdate.log). To make this possible, we have forced the upgrade path to 1.1.9 through 1.1.7.28. Therefore, if your current OS version is 1.1.6 or earlier then your device will first get 1.1.7.28, and once installed it will get 1.1.9.28.

And now to the usual drill before attempting to upgrade your devices,

  • Take a backup of your data before attempting to upgrade your device. A successful backup operation is indicated by a green dot in the UI.
  • Make sure there is at least about 2-3 GB of free mass memory space in your device (see Settings > About product)
  • Restart your device before you start.
  • Do keep your device connected to a battery charger during the whole process.
  • Do not restart the device while the update is in progress, even if it appears to take a long time.
  • The device screen may blank out during the update process, you may waken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress.
  • If you use Phonehook from OpenRepos, uninstall it before upgrading.
  • If you use Patchmanager, revert all applied patches before upgrading.
  • If your device is running software version lower than 1.0.4.20 and have WareHouse app installed (i.e you are using OpenRepos), disable all openrepo repositories before attempting to upgrade your device.

For detailed instructions on updating software, visit our support pages at Zendesk.

If connected to the internet, and your account is subscribed for early access releases, your Jolla should receive an OS update notification shortly.

Ambience and global settings

We have harmonized the system default tones and ambience tones to be global tone settings.

  • The system default tones on your device are listed under Settings > Sounds and feedback.
  • Available ambiences are now accessible under a separate menu in Settings > Ambiences.
  • When you create a new ambience from Gallery app,
    • you now have the option to override one or all of the system default tones by adding "actions".
    • this action will change the system default tones to the custom tones set globally, i.e for all ambiences.
    • you can verify this by going back to Settings > Sounds and feedback, you should see your newly set custom tone applied in there.

For example: Consider that you have two ambiences A and B. A has an action for replacing default chat tone and B doesn't.

  • case1: Activating ambience A will change the current chat tone and that tone will be shown in Settings > Sounds and feedback
  • case 2: Activating ambience B will not change the current chat tone, it will continue to use the tone set earlier by ambience A
  • case 3: If you want ambience B also to have a different chat tone, then set an action to change the chat tone to something you want. It will then change the current chat tone.

Known issues

  • When there are no notifications on the lock screen, quick events access by left swipe takes you to Home instead of Events view.
  • In rare cases, Gallery may appear empty after the upgrade. This is due to a glitch in indexing the files. A device restart should set this right.
  • In landscape mode, text field does not autoscroll to visible area.
  • Unable to zoom on text documents in Office app.
  • At times, toggling wifi hotspot restarts the device.
  • Maps app has lags and delays in zooming for long routes.
  • Local changes done to calDAV accounts trigger automatic sync to the servers. The sync schedule has no effect on this. We are working on providing a control point for you to disable automatic sync on local changes.
  • The order of Android app notifications may vary after a restart. This is expected as 1) the order depends on the time the notification was received 2) upon a restart, the notifications are resent, thus the time of arrival may vary.
  • Rendering issues for special characters in Gallery/Media app.
  • Local changes to calDAV account triggers automatic synchronization of changes to the server.. With the next upgrade, we will provide a toggle switch to control the behaviour.
  • First key-press after changing layout comes with old layout when using TOH KBD or bluetooth keyboard.
  • Deadkeys on TOH KBD do not work.
  • Unable to zoom in/out of pictures synced from Facebook in Gallery.
  • After installing Android runtime from Jolla Store, a restart is required before Android apps can start functioning
  • Facebook Android app installed from Aptoide marketplace may take a long time to log in.
  • Password input field in some web authentication forms may not open the virtual keyboard automatically. In such cases, a tap anywhere outside the textbox and back into the password field should bring up the keyboard.
  • The UI does not currently have an option to safely unmount the SD card. Please be cautious to not remove the SD card while it is in use.
  • In rare cases it has turned out to be impossible to log in to an Exchange account.
SSLv3 is not supported anymore by default by Sailfish OS as it is insecure. Those customers having problems with the Exchange 2003-servers should enable TLSv1-protocolsupport on their frontend Exchange-servers. More information in https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7568. Please contact your Exchange server admin.
  • Clock alarm will not play the sound if you have turned the device off and the sound is in MP3 format. Ensure clock alerts (while device off) by using WAV or OGG sounds for now and keep the sound files in the device memory (not in memory card).
  • Tablet specific:
  • 1080p video recording is not supported yet, will be enabled with the next OS upgrade
  • Viewfinder aspect ratio is shrunk in video mode until you start recording. It is fine in the recorded video itself.
  • Bluetooth keyboard does not work on Android apps yet
  • Camera settings displays incorrect resolution options in Settings > Apps > Camera
  • Photos may have artifacts (e.g. green lines)
  • In rare cases, inserting and removing SD card multiple times may restart the tablet
  • Some Android apps installed from Aptoide (e.g. Facebook, Facebook messenger, Spotify) do not launch on the tablet. We are in discussions with Aptoide to resolve this issue.

@bijjal: in "Ambience tones now follow global tone settings. You can override global tone settings by adding actions to ambience. Read more to understand the new behaviour better." the "Read more" link points to a restricted version of TJC.

g7, thanks for noticing, fixing it now.

what about users who have already 1.1.9.28? what about us in future updates, will they work normally?

"Viewfinder aspect ratio is shrunk in video mode" UNTIL you start recording. It is fine in the recorded video itself.

Wohoo! I got notging else... Woo-freakdy-hooo! :D Have been waiting gor the 2.0 UI, from the sneak preview pictures online, it looks just awesome! Thanks a million Jolla and the crew! :)

It's here! First to read the upgrade notes to see if I want to wait a bit.. (maybe not!)

Downloaded early access v1.1.9.28, busy optimising.

WilliePre ( 2015-09-09 16:21:19 +0300 )edit

Mine didn't optimise, must be able to check to see if it needs it.. I hope!

No problems updating to early access 1.1.9.28 from 1.1.7.28. Congratulations, it is beautiful! :)

Installation of v1.1.9.28 ran smoothly, no issues encountered. Now lets experience Sailfish OS 2.0, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Update does not work for me, I am stuck watching the origami bird. The update installed without errors, but now the only thing I can do is watch the bird and turn display on and off. Power button, double tap to wake and swipe down to close works. Reboot does not help.

Pornis ( 2015-09-09 17:01:44 +0300 )edit

I have a really slow connection, it seems servers are too busy

pmelas ( 2015-09-09 17:08:31 +0300 )edit

Long-press power key also opens Top menu, but replaces lock action with power off

This does not work for me. A long press simply does nothing...maybe it has something to do with a previous install of powermenu2 some time ago? But I've uninstalled it before upgrading.

yoktobit ( 2015-09-09 17:32:17 +0300 )edit

@yoktobit: Did you have the top menu open when long pressing power key? It should replace the lock action with power off.

bijjal ( 2015-09-09 17:34:29 +0300 )edit

Looks like my answer was converted to comment, looks like I need to start new thread as commenting comments sucks on Askbot...

Pornis ( 2015-09-09 17:47:50 +0300 )edit

@Pornis : I could try to help you. Do you happen to be on IRC? Do you have developer mode enabled on the device?

Got the upgrade even if I'm not opted in for early access? Does this have to do something with the fact the previous update was rolled out to small group of regular users also?

jaine ( 2015-09-09 17:48:45 +0300 )edit

Thanks for the update.Should phone, message, browser and the camera apps displayed by tapping the bottom of the screen even if the home screen has programs open?

Wow. I am impressed with the new UI. I can really see how much work and usability testing went into this.

It is in fact the best UI in terms of usability and user experience I saw on a phone for a very long time. There are only some minor quirks here and there. But overall I am astonished how nice and butterly smooth this runs.

leszek ( 2015-09-09 17:57:33 +0300 )edit

After the update completed, instead of proper restart I got a black screen and red LED. It's like that for 10 minutes now. Any ideas? I will wait patiently. (I didn't have any problems or long update with 1.1.7.)

William ( 2015-09-09 18:03:39 +0300 )edit

@bijjal: nope, it doesn't work while the top menu is open neither when it's closed. It just does nothing, except when I press it really long (10sek+), then it directly shuts down.

The next OS upgrade will include further improvements [...]

  • Feeds support in events view

Which Feeds support do you mean? The real Feeds like they were present in MeeGo or the Jolla 'notifications' one which are broken in this release now?

Alex ( 2015-09-09 18:12:38 +0300 )edit

A very interesting change that has not been mentioned is that now Android app covers update in real time rather than showing the last screenshot that was shown before swiping the app away.

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2015-09-09 18:36:09 +0300 )edit

Downloaded and installed in under 40 mins with no problems. Will now have to try all the new features - should keep me busy for a while:)

richardski ( 2015-09-09 18:38:10 +0300 )edit

Update downloaded and installed with no problem. Love it so far!

sidv ( 2015-09-09 18:40:06 +0300 )edit

So, still no full support for android notifications? Since non official whatsapp clients have a really difficult life, a real implementation of notifications is really needed( i mean chat/group notifications tones and led managed by alien dalvik)

ZioBilly ( 2015-09-09 19:05:38 +0300 )edit

@ZioBilly, it says on the release notes that there's now sound, vibration and LED notifications for Android apps. What else do you need? A post card by mail? ;)

Everything succeeded well, too. My Jolla phone is like totally brand new one. Thank you Jolla!

N9Sailfish ( 2015-09-09 19:35:57 +0300 )edit

@raketti it says: "Android apps now use the "Chat" system tone for notifications, and alert with vibration and notification LED" It means every notification coming from android is Chat type, and not customizable by whatsapp I still haven't tested it yet, but it seems pretty clear

ZioBilly ( 2015-09-09 19:49:30 +0300 )edit

I did the illegal move. Since I was sure that the update went through (the white line at least) and the phone got stuck in restarting, I took out the battery after an hour and started the phone. Everything works perfectly now.

First : Bravo ! Really nice and polished update, great UI evolution. It's really a level up !

Then, I directly noticed 2 things which, as a UI & UX designer I don't get... No shortcuts on the main screen, no pulley menu... I was a huge user of this feature especially to access the camera or the settings, things you mind quickly need but shut down a second later. I know Ambiance are a big thing for you but I don't change ambiance 8 times a day, but I do change my connexion to save battery life. You could just let people choose between a shortcut menu and ambiance, or/and add connexion management there.

Other OS are not perfect, but if all of them offer ahortcut for connexion, there might be something there ;)

And keeping tiles open as shorcut is not an valid answer.

Also when is an upgrade of Android planned, it's sad I have to use another phone to show some of my work... I'd like to show it on Sailfish

xavierolland ( 2015-09-09 20:34:54 +0300 )edit

The upgrade worked well, although it tried to reinstall all already installed apps again after the welcome screen asked me the current time and so on. This process consumed 15% battery. (I disconnected from the charger after the upgrade was finished.)

UX-Regression: I'm missing the green telepathy presence status. At the moment, I don't know anymore if something went wrong with the XMPP connection. Please put it in the status bar or somewhere else visible. :-)

Congratulations for issuing such a great release (again)!. Even if its pre-release its fast and stable (as far as i can tell after 4h usage).

Just one minor remark. It is (AFAIK) not possible to start the weather app from the events screen (just slide in or out the forecast). It would be fantastic if there was a way to start it by (long)tap, as it was possible in the previous release. Any plans on this?

softmetz ( 2015-09-09 22:42:53 +0300 )edit

There will come the possibility to add shortcuts and specific settings favorites on the event page to access them directly. Ok, they are not on the main home page but at least I look often on the events page too :)

Many weird, not to say totally laughable UX design choices.

The up-to-three-items pull down menu that used to be on home screen and was somewhat practical is now...gone! For no appearent reason, it could well have worked even with how the home screen is designed now.

But instead, that menu is for some weird reason on the lock-screen, only. So how do I get to the lock screen? Well,.I need first to lock the device, then double tap to open screen, THEN I can use that quick menu. But once leaving the lock screen I have to do the same proecedure to get back there. WTF?

Same goes for the new media player controls, FIRST lock the phone, unlock the thing again.to get the lock screen. What intern made this decision?

And yeah, to lock the device, there now has to be a from top pulley, THEN a click to lock. Guess it was too easy before, right? XXXXX REST OF THE CONVERTED TO COMMENT POST BELOW XXX

There was never a shortcut menu on the home screen.

nthn ( 2015-09-10 00:38:03 +0300 )edit

what do you mean? Sure there was, a pulley and you could customize three apps to launch from there. ok, lock, home whatever. the lock screen was always accessible, easily.

Flashing up twice the choice from the pulley-menu IMHO brings useless delays in your daily workflow. Just execute what has been selected. The new UI of Sailfish 2 already makes a very smooth impression - so it'd be great to get rid of this gimmick .... any option / code to switch it off ?

yes thank you very much for this release! Android notifications are working finally! Event view much better now, with place for improvement as more entries to show calendar and rss!

@jobe-m: Wouldn't the ambiances pulley be more logical on the events page? Party, work e.t.c.. are all events. I agree with xavierolland that it was a bad move to change the main page pulley.

i agree with most of what you're saying here, but this one is mentioned in the release notes:

"Only tablet users can have their favorite settings shortcut icons on the events view screen, not the phone users...why? They would have fitted there perfectly on the phone as well."

This is only for now, and will be included in the next release

@shellkr: nope, no go. i saw it once after install but now it.doesnt work. bug?

I’d prefer a quick one-swipe-lock instead of confirming once again to lock. Choosing ambiances was great by going to the gallery or by swapping the other half ….

I can't upgrade.

"ongelma kaupassa - kriittinen ongelma sovellusrekisterissä" (problem at the store - critical problem at the app register)

Next message: "päivityksen koon määrittely epäonnistui" (defining the size of the update failed)

Then the loading of the upgrade started, but the bar is only a few percents and nothing else happens.
