I would like the function to be able to start multiple applications via just one click. When you reboot the phone and want to start your "most common" apps (mail, calendar, phone etc.).

Would be also great if you could select an ambiance that autostarts the selected apps. There could be music ambiance that autostarts all music related apps and so on..

Or to start dalvik-stop

I had also similar type of idea -> to combine apps to ambiances. https://together.jolla.com/question/108490/feature-request-application-selection-to-ambiances/

But this idea would be possible linked like settings list (where you would define): "Applications to start automatically after reboot" 1. 2. 3. etc.

If you're handy with the command line, there's no reason why you cant set up systemd unit files for apps to be launched at startup.

or a .desktop file that runs a script which launches several apps

Sure, but don't act like there is only one way to do things. This may not be the 'one true answer' for everyone, but the possibility to do this exists and can provide the desired functionality.
