Persistant SSH password

I frequently use SCP to transfer files between my laptop and Jolla, but for the sake of safety, I enable SSH only when I need it. This is where the problem occurs: it's really nice, when you have a memorable, but hard-to-guess password, which is safe enough for not changing it; as a consequence of current implementation, I have to set my password each time I want to copy something over. It's really inconvenient. Is there a way to keep the password persistant (after/with pressing the save button)?
P.S. I know about SSH keys, and use them frequently, but I'd prefer not to use them now.
the other way round it, is to change from using devel-su to just 'su' with a set password of your choice, thus negating the need to add a password into the developer mode window. I use this always.

Besides, the server does not launch (refuses connection), until you set a password in the settings, so logging in as the root user would not solve the problem in any way.
