1 image 2 avatars?

Recently I photographed 2 friends together (single image) and subsequently tried to use the same picture to setup avatars in 2 contacts. Interestingly this does not work: both contacts end up having the same avatar. Strange. Are avatars defined a links to the original image instead of copies of the defined regions of the source image?
