[feature request] SIM Hot-Swap

asked 2015-10-04 15:56:32 +0300

I just discovered that SF 1.1.9.28 asked me to restart the device after I swapped the SIM. As far as I can remember, this was not necessary in previous versions. Endless restarts are actually the domain of M$, at least I thought this. While this is not really a big issue, as frequent traveller I always appriciated that SIM swaps have been easy with N9 und Jolla, contrary to my Lumia. Is there a reason for the system restart? Can we return to the previous behaviour?

I support that. But AFAIR SFOS has never been too happy about the SIM swaps of mine.

It has always asked you to restart the device, if you remove the sim card and then put it back, but there is no need to do that. It works just fine.

Although it was never supported officially, I can hot-swap my sim any time, you just need to tap outside the reboot notice and you get a PIN input screen. No warranties though, do at your own risk!

I am quite sure that this warning / notice was not present in previous releases (not sure since when we have it). The warning says "SIM card MIGHT not work reliably". There is a reset pin on the SIM contact pads. It should be possible to initialize the SIM after a hot-swap successfully. Maybe there is really no problem? Then this notice should be removed.

At some point this has changed so that now (SFOS 3.1.0.11 Seitseminen) when a simcard is removed and reinsterted it will no longer be activated until reboot.

The device shows warning and suggests reboot but it can be ignored. However the network indicator stays grayed out and I found no way to make networking start again.

I tried the obvious things; activate/deactivate airplane mode, systemctl restart ofono.service, kill -HUP rild... nothing makes it start again.

While it's not being officially supported I can confirm that most of the stuff just works and currently the warning is there because there can be issues which are not dealt correctly. Eg. some releases ago the mobile data transfers were incorrectly added up to the old sim and not for the current being used (until rebooted, nowadays this works correctly).

"nowadays this works correctly": Means data volumes are now counted correctly and there are no other known issues? It means that the warning can be ignored by the users. Maybe it can then even be removed from SFOS and save users from doing unnecessary restarts. Would look better. Thanks!

@Stefanix I meant that the data counters work correctly now after hot-swapping the SIM-card. :)

Other issues.. there still can be some but personally I do hot-swap SIM's without restarting and haven't noticed any issues so maybe that warning can be removed in the future.

I second tigeli. I have hotswapped between Saunalahti and DNA SIM cards, and PIN code (duh), Internet connection APN, MMS settings at least have updated properly. I don't keep count of data transferred, so I can't comment on that. Works, but as it's not quaranteed, prepare for issues... I've had none, though :)
