On the default Home view (top), flick down gesture was left free on Sailfish OS 1.1.9. This poll asks ideas on what do we want that gesture to do

On earlier versions this gesture opened the lock screen, which was part of the main UI. Update moved the lock screen as a top layer, currently accessible only from stage when the screen is shut down. Earlier action is added as one of the options, but there are many other possibilities too. The most voted options could advance as feature requests (if not already existing)

Options are added as comments, feel free to vote one or more of them or add your own idea to the list.

Edit: Options 3,4 and 6 dropped for having only 0-2 votes. Please click "see more comments" for the rest of the options

I really like the Global Search idea! Implementing it in the location above the home page makes it a perfect place for a development towards a smart assistant feature!

The feature request to add a global search was polled here: https://together.jolla.com/question/61161/wiki-poll-would-you-like-to-have-global-search/

That's one of my favorites too - But could be also one of the pulley menu options (I added on option for that now). Thanks, and please convert your answer to wiki too. This is a poll post.

@simo Yes, they could be combined, so I voted for both...

And converted to wiki.

About option 1:

A flick-down to lock screen from home will need a flick-up to home from lock screen which will mess up with launcher swipe and make inconsistency in UI design.

True. One possibility (if option one would ever be the one) is that on the lock screen, unlocking gesture is replaced (from left/right to only flick-up). About swipe... yep, currently the launcher is accessible with both swipe and a flick. Would only a swipe do the job, leaving flick (even another one) for something else again? Worth some thoughts.

Why would flick to unlock mess up flick to app drawer?

Mohjive ( 2015-10-08 16:45:04 +0300 )edit

@Mohjive, obviously they are both in the same direction. And we have side swipes to home, from every where. Even if there was no app drawer, this additional flick would ruin the whole design.

AliN ( 2015-10-08 23:31:47 +0300 )edit

I still have quiite mixed feelings on this... There's some real potential on the easy acces to lock screen, for example: Display shuts down quite fast when on there, making this actually a one-gesture-lock.

The question is how important is it to have both the flick and swipe to open launcher, so would a swipe be enough? Flick only works on Home, and on down scrolled Events view anyway in this purpose. For myself, a swipe would do, so using flick-up on home for anything else would be an option, enabling also option 1 in the poll without breaking the design. Some opinions needed I guess.

simo ( 2015-10-08 23:45:58 +0300 )edit

Consider this: You're on lock screen having side flicks and swipes (4 ways) for home. Now you want to add an additional flick (5th) for this yet having a swipe in the same direction but for another purpose. I think this is a real mess-up.

Furthermore. In the new design you don't need to go back home to lock. You can swipe from top and tap. Even with this suggested lock screen flick, you need to go home first by a swipe and then lock. So this is not to add anything to the design except holding a custom from the old design.

@simo you already know that askbot is a polling engine so why do you try to poll something that is already in polling?

  1. in some threads about new VS old this is a hot topic
  2. 76 votes https://together.jolla.com/question/108177/feature-request-lockscreen-pulley-on-homescreen-11928/
  3. that is your own idea of changing the layout upside down
  4. that will be on the carousel if I am not wrong about it becoming customizable
  5. very old feature request that could be solved less intrusive

Last but not least, the starting post is a wiki and the options are comments, collecting Karma for you - what was the second rule of polling again (first is do not talk about polls)?

option 9. is my favourite!

Yeah... You're one great moderator, but I do find it only good to have the different options regarding one gesture within one post - Already existing feature requests are there and behind, sinked among 12 000 posts. Tag search "feature-request" "home-screen" does return 25 questions, but using the tag search is not for everybody - There are people who doesn't know a tag "home-screen" exists.

In overall, I hope you can find both the good and bad aspects in our posts. If the good beats the bad, it's worth a post, if not, feel free to moderate it away - In either case, thanks (really) for sharing your point of view too.

ps. voting this question or its comments does not affect to anyones karma. Instead, voting your answer would, which is against that rule in a poll post - Please convert to wiki.

Ah ok so no Karma for comments either?! As my answer has nothing to do with actually polling I will keep it that way. As you mention year old topics yourself, don't you find it hard that each duplication of those old issues actually adds noise on top? It is diverting the effort as not everyone involved will read your poll but will get notified if you post to the question it all started with.

The problem with using discrete posts for each option is that it's impossible to get a good measure which is really more popular. It is dependent on how many times and how long the post has been among the first on the front page. Some posts sink right through because at just that time many other users posted their suggestions/issues/questions while other emerge several times because someone edits or answers them. Collecting solutions/suggestions for a single issue does give better comparison imo.

But each suggestion should be a separate answer (wiki post). I tapped the "wrong" suggestion by mistake and it's not possible to undo on comments.

@chemist Let's have another point of view: One user likes the idea of global search. He also likes the idea of adding pulley menu to home, and even more the idea of having access to the lock screen. Now what does he do? He votes all three separate feature requests up, or realizes that implementing all of those as a simple home screen gesture is impossible/difficult to reach in a nice way - so he makes a selection which would be the best for him, and in the best case goes and suggest another implementation idea to the other two, ending up having all three features in a meaningful place.

I'm not saying this wasn't possible also with three separate feature requests, but a poll like this might help in that process a lot. I actually agree on this poll adding some noise, but this time some useful noise, the pros (hopefully) overcoming the cons.

Additionally, this kind of poll pulling different options together around one gesture enables discussion between/combining/implementing the features ssome other way than the original posts, while it shows the other possibilities to compare with.

@Mohjive I was afraid this poll might gather quite o lot of options, so I chose the comment way this time (For that I didn't want to see several pages of ideas in the end). You should be able to remove a misclick if you do that soon enough after voting (press the arrow again), at least that's how I remember it was working earlier
