Disable SMS previews?

How can I disable that incredibly annoying SMS preview at the top of my screen? This is particularly annoying when you get a lot of long text messages. The preview blocks perfectly useful areas of my screen (firefox address bar, text, ...). I already get a beep, a vibrate, a blinking led AND a notification in the notification area. There's really no need to make it any more obvious. If I want to read the damned message, I'll open the the SMS app and read it.
If it make a difference, I'm running 1.1.9.28
I agree that it should be tuned (some privacy settings), but not removed completely, or at least optional.
