On Jolla the Android Redphone apk can't verify the received sms code message, and manual verification code entry doesn't work, so I can't install the secure phone app. I would love to see the app Sailfished...

The RedPhone source code is available at https://github.com/WhisperSystems/RedPhone The TextSecure source code is available at https://github.com/WhisperSystems/TextSecure/

Integration of the TextSecure V2 protocol into the OS like in CyanogenMod would be even better. https://whispersystems.org/blog/cyanogen-integration/

especially now, as many are seeking WhatsApp alternatives and TextSecure has been released with IP based messaging support! https://whispersystems.org/blog/the-new-textsecure/ Clients for iOS and Desktop are in the making. In addition to synchronous instant messages with XMPP (and hopefully soon OTR), TextSecure support would make a good counterpart for asynchronous messages (SMS- and IP-based). Integrated into the unified messaging of SailfishOS would be ideal. The only problem I see is to find an adaequate replacement for Google's push service (GCM).

It is actually possible to get TextSecure to run by using the voice call verification method.

That said, it is not possible to access Jolla's address book, nor does it seem possible to add contact. Anyone know a way to do that?

On Cyanogenmod ( http://www.cyanogenmod.org/blog/whisperpush-secure-messaging-integration) textsecure is combined with the whisperpush protocol see github: https://github.com/WhisperSystems/TextSecure-Server/wiki/API-Protocol

I became interested into TextSecure, until i found this piece from F-Droid: »The latest version of the application is 0.6.2, and the security flaw has now been fixed. However, the author has not published any source code corresponding to the binary he released of this version, and far from wishing to help anyone stuck with his previous disastrous mistake, he actually asked for the application to be removed from our repository as he wants to distribute it via Google Play only.« Kills trust in it.

P.S.: dates back to August 2012, https://f-droid.org/posts/security-notice-textsecure/ no more information on it and still not back in F-Droid store.

well, that's not the whole story, read more here: https://github.com/WhisperSystems/TextSecure/issues/127

@tad Thanks, I have not seen this. Helps to see the big picture and motivation, and at least the TextSecure dev seems to be working on it (while i understand his points but do not agree with his original conclusion).

Is anybody out there capable of writing a basic textsecure client? It's too bad we still don't have a whatsapp (which especially since the fb takeover I'm never, ever going to use again) alternative on sailfish, and this seems the most trustworthy to me from all the alternatives... So come on! Do it! Please!

@Bimberle in the meantime you can try to use the Android app. Check my 2nd edit here: https://together.jolla.com/question/29379/instant-messaging-whatsapp-alternatives-to-use-on-jolla/#post-id-30276

@tad thanks for the info, already voted on it. Though I don't understand generally why not everybody is using textsecure; as far as I can tell, it's the only app with no downsides (client/server are FOSS, has been audited, has push, works async, works for SMS as well, excellent reputation of dev)

Bimberle ( 2014-03-19 18:01:53 +0300 )edit

Are there any news on this issue? Do you know anyone who is working on a native textsecure client app?

Of all the possible "crypto" IMs out there, this is the one to go for. Would really love to see support for it on Jolla. In principle, it is available through the Jolla aptoide store, but still needs google services (which I don't want to install) and if you accept that, it doesn't seem to work.

Wouldn't bet on a native textsecure client, though. The devs are even struggling to get iOS support going.

@berniyh I think you are right, this is the one to go for and it seems that there are more sailors who agree with us. What can we on together do to push this work?

This would really be important to add. Especially when it comes to trust, I'd really prefer handling secure messaging on Sailfish directly, rather than through an Android app.

Since Jolla tablet is a new privacy oriented device, we need secure messaging!

+1 for TextSecure. It's badly needed

100% agree! Device encryption and TextSecure are missing!

Indeed, a much-needed App. I would also pay for it, if necessary.

I wanted to try that Android Textsecure. But it doesn't work. Was anyone able to use it or is it not working?

It needs the Google services installed and configured. It is possible to get it working on Sailfish, but it's a deep intrusion into the system, afaics.

berniyh ( 2015-01-30 06:56:19 +0300 )edit

Yeah you get it running but it is pretty much useless as you even with google services can send contacts texts but are unable to receive texts.

Receiving messages works fine most of the time here

After a little testing (probably too little to say anything definitive), it seems to me that after a certain time of inactivity, I have to bring the app to the foreground before it receives a message again. Perhaps some background job stops running after switching into some power saving mode?

Does anyone know the exact reason or possibly even a workaround?

here and there.
Seems gpg well used there is addon in thunderbird too. I don't know if it's a good alternative.
