2.0.0.10 upgrade failed -> WLAN networking broken [1.1.9.30]

I upgraded to 1.1.9.30 (early-access) successfully. Then I tried to upgrade to 2.0.0.10; I created backup, the update was downloaded successfully but the actual upgrade (Sailfish logo and the progress bar on black background..) failed. It said the upgrade wasn't successful and asked me to reboot the device by touching "Reboot" button in the bottom of the screen.

After reboot, I naturally tried to retry the update, but now the phone is continuously lacking networking support: when I go to Settings -> WLAN, it says "Networking is not available. Please restart device." I rebooted, twice, using power button, but situation is the same. I tried the Restart networking option in Settings -> Utilities, but no luck.

Edit: according to @schmittlauch, USB networking isn't working either.

Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

I also had problems with the connection. But it works now after rebooting, flight mode and back.

Hmmh... Mobile data seems to work, so I'll try to download the update again over mobile data (although it will take some time).

Hmmh, let's try that flight mode and back trick. Nope, still the same -- "Networking is not available". But now the device thought it has the already-downloaded installation image and I'll try to install it again. Hope it now goes through.

Edit: It didn't. It says: "Sailfish OS could not be updated. Please try again later. The device will restart now." And after restarting, the phone is lacking WLAN networking as stated in the original post (question).

DISCLAIMER: I'm not responsible for what you're doing. Please just follow the instructions if you know what you're doing.

See the other answer for instructions on how to fix your wifi. If you can't update afterwards, this is for you:

In my case the update didn't work because pkcon refresh showed the following error message:

Fatal error: Authentication failed (is SSU set up correctly?)

Thanks to the great & wonderful @tigeli I can provide a workaround for that:

  1. SSH onto your Jolla (fingerterm should also be ok)
  2. become root using devel-su
  3. disable the customer-jolla repository using ssu dr customer-jolla as it's currently causing authentication issues
  4. try whether pkcon refresh succeeds now
  5. if it succeeded, updating your Jolla using version --dup should work now.
  6. Don't forget to reenable the customer repo after reboot using ssu er customer-jolla

Thanks, but i was need disable also openrepos-* repositories. Hmmm, before update i was disabled it... After that i was successful updated via version --dup. PS: I was not disable openrepos, only uninstall patches.

It's not working for me. While update process I got the error: Cannot write file '/var/tmp/AP_0xtT4LVF/repodata/repomd.xml'. Then the phone tries to download the nine packages but each won't work. Any idea what I can do?

Lupus ( 2015-10-25 13:32:04 +0300 )edit

It's not working for me too: Enable developer mode to use rnd-dist-upgrade, or run as root, but I can`t activate developer mode(

I upgrade it! 1. Recovery Mode->5) Try btrfs recovery if your device is in bootloop 2.Than I can activate developer mode 3. "..Then the phone tries to download the nine packages but each won't work.." 4. Than I restore the registry of applications. ... Profit! At this time WiFi is not worked.

You're right! That's working! Great! Thanks a lot!!

But then there's the question why this situation happened due to upgrade, maybe I'll leave this question open for a while if someone from Jolla wants to investigate it further.

hzb ( 2015-10-23 16:22:47 +0300 )edit

The problem is:

  • On 1.1.9.30 we have sbj-wlan-0.2.6-10.21.4.jolla.armv7hl
  • On 2.0.0.10 we have sbj-wlan-0.2.6-10.21.1.jolla.armv7hl

We downgrade a package during a system upgrade ?????

titilambert ( 2015-10-23 16:24:22 +0300 )edit

BTW @hzb are you trying to download the upgrade ? Because it doesn't seems working for me :/

titilambert ( 2015-10-23 16:25:26 +0300 )edit

@titilambert I thought that I'd retry, but if there's this kind of fundamental problem, then it's probably not worth trying... I'm wondering if that is just a human mistake in the repo (old package put into 2.0.0.10 directory)?

I was unable to enable developer mode or start the recovery mode. Instead I opened up File Browser App, directed to /home/.pk-zypp-dist-upgrade-cache/packages/adaptation1/armv7hl/ and installed the sbj-wlan-0.2.6-10.21.1.jolla.armv7hl.rpm file by clicking on it and chose install from pulley-menu.

Rebooted after installation, and WLAN was working again!

Thanks @titilambert for the tip of the package location.

Update 2015-10-26:

NB! Do this at your own risk!

To enable developer-mode if installation of jolla-developer-modefails: Follow procedure from: https://thejollablog.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/jolla-recovery-mode/ to enter shell-mode:

Once chrooted to rootfs:

bash-3.2# cat /etc/sailfish-release
NAME=SailfishOS
ID=sailfishos
VERSION="1.1.9.30 (Eineheminlampi) (armv7hl)"
VERSION_ID=1.1.9.30
PRETTY_NAME="SailfishOS 1.1.9.30 (Eineheminlampi) (armv7hl)"
SAILFISH_BUILD=30
SAILFISH_FLAVOUR=release
HOME_URL="https://sailfishos.org/"

System says we're on 1.1.9.30

bash-3.2# ssu release
Device release is currently: 2.0.0.10

SSU thinks version is something else. I revert back to system-known setting.

bash-3.2# ssu release 1.1.9.30
bash-3.2# exit

Restart device and try to enable developer mode.

I could then follow schmittlauchs answer and upgrade my Jolla Phone! Thanks @schmittlauch, for excellent description!

Good to hear, but are you able to enable developer-mode?

Trying to enable developer mode I get: Problem with installing: jolla-developer-mode. (Is there a way to access this package and manually install it?)

I am unable to restart the upgrade, even if I rename /home/.pk-zypp-dist-upgrade-cache/

I can mount rootfs from recovery mode by shutting down phone and press power + vol down and connect with usb to linux and telnet 10.42.66.66.

I am trying to figure out what is causing the problem with developer-mode and upgrade process. I'm not going to factory reset my device (yet)...

For me WLAN did not work, and developer mode could not be activates (1). installing sbj-wlan-0.2.6-10.21.1.jolla.armv7hl.rpm from the file browser (location: /home/.pk-zypp-dist-upgrade-cache/packages/adaptation1/armv7hl/); no WLAN did work again after reboot (but downloading the 2.0.0.10 update again didn't work due to authentication problem; the same problem with developer mode) (2). I did "ssu release 1.1.9.30" in the shell vie telnet connection. (3). I did "version --dup" in the ShellEx App (was installed before); after reboot 2.0 was installed

I just tried the sbj-wlan method, but it doesn't work without 3G...and I don't have 3G right now. I'll try in a few and feedback.
