Why are apps minimized when screen is locked? [duplicate]

I don't like that the app I'm currently using is minimized when the screen is locked. I would prefer to just be able to pick up where I was before the lock.

Is there a reason for this behavior, or would it be possible to change (or make the behavior configurable)?
