Limiting number of questions allowed in a day

Due to recent abuse of new users by posting hundreds of questions in short time - should there be a limit of allowed posts in single day? It can also be coupled with karma so a known valuable member of the community would be allowed to post more. I dont see real reason what for new user would genuinely have 50 new questions in single day.

The truth is that if we limit the number of posts per day per user the spammers will just create more and more new accounts. Also technically it is much more easier to cleanup posts made by one or two users. ;)

Also the spammers seem to be adapting into changes made into account creating process very quickly or even creating accounts manually.

ok, valid arguments. I guess even allowing only on account per ip adress per day would not help against adapting spammers.

@mosen yep, the we have tried of blocking ip-subnets also.. ;)

Would somehow matching texts help? At least the recent spammers seem.to have posted messages that are 99% similar to each other with replacing just one or two subtexts always in same location...

All we want is to help. Also we should maybe switch channels from time to time, as now we are discussing our manoeuvres publicly right on the battlefield. ;)

We have now deployed post rate limits for users without enough karma.

At the moment the implementation is till a bit rough on the edges. For example it does not tell the user if they are allowed to post or not before they try to submit a post. And in case the post is rejected based on the rate limit, the user will lose what ever they had written in the post.

But we'll keep improving this, and also exploring other ways of spam prevention.

Sounds good to me. Could you tell how many posts are possible now, so users could keep track of theor post? So you know, when you are at your limit and dont loose the content you were trying to ask about?

At the moment it's 1 question or answer per hour, and 1 comment per five minutes.

Really good point. I myself have never posted more than two questions on one day. So having only one post per day for say, karma<30 would be fair enough imo.

I could also think of spam officer roles among a bunch of trustworthy users. So perhaps posts could be flagged automatically as possible spam by the server, and those spam officers might just delete them. But I do not know if this is achievable easily.

A good point, @lakutalo. I have posted 21 questions altogether and never more than 2 in one day.

Answers, comments, yes. New questions, no.

We have a limit on the number of votes per day. That, IMO, makes less sense than limiting a number of new threads.

How about proper SPAM protection?

You could give some example of _proper_ spam protection?

tigeli ( 2015-11-02 09:14:14 +0300 )edit

How about CAPTCHA for starters

no captcha please! It is a hassle and slows down the process for everyone. If the spamer had bad intention to specifcally hinder jolla, they would have won by slowing us all down. Daily post limit is enough imho.

@tortoisedoc No, captcha does not work.. we have already tried it before.

Not @ Message drafting; but CAPTCHA @ registration / login stage should cover fake user registrations hence potentially alot of spam attempts already.

I think you should and should combine it with something like CAPTCHA. (Even so the spam flagging seems to work quite effectively and so it is easy to filter the spam out by tag.)

I hate CAPTCHAs, especially these days usually this means you have to let Google know what you do (again). But it would solve the problem of automatic account registration, that @tigeli pointed out. So for the greater good ...
