Currently for each votable content on TJC we see only the sum of all votes.

For controversial content that means it will always fade out in comparison to concordant content.

For an extreme example say half of all voting TJC users vote for, the other half against one specific concept, it will always level out at 0 and fade into the abyss.

I think we should adopt a more open approach to the whole voting system - namely display both up AND downvotes to indicate if a topic is controversial and bring attention to it to see if there's a reason for that.

I do not know why there is a downvote option as constructive voting should lead to a good result anyway. Having the mark as spam button should suffice, don't you agree?

I would love to hear some feedback on this. Am I mistaken on the implications of my suggestion?

I agree.

But I think the downvote button is quite important. Lets say someone talks to whatsapp and can get them to promise they would make a native client for SFOS on the condition it became mandatory and deeply embedded into the UI/UX/general system. Definetly not spam and for somepeople welcomed news, but in my opinion a very very bad idea. Bad enough that if it would get implemented I would probably switch to a featurephone, since the prospect of having to resort to patches just to keep my jolla "clean" doesnt sound like fun to me.

I can imagine in this scenario there would be at least as many upvotes as downvotes (assuming that every other user also sees downvotes as a legitimate option to express a strong negative feeling towards a post). That one example I would definetly downvote after posting my opinion about it in a comment.

Good example, so we need both up and downvotes. However for now we can not determine how the votes came together.

I agree that somehow a "hot" topic should be marked important somehow. Another solution than presenting positive and negative votes could be to present the total number of votes.

I hope this topic get's some recognition amongst those responcible for askbot implementation for TJC on Jollas side. I don't even know if Jolla does that themselves though...

If you just display the number of total votes, what will that show? Or did you refer to total votes and pro votes instead of pro and contra votes? What happens to the ones that only receive negative feedback? It shows 0 pro votes and x total votes. So it does not differ that much from my suggestion if I'm not mistaken.

@MoritzJT: I see that I forgot to mention that the up and down votes should be presented as today, i.e. a sum for up and down votes complemented with a new sum of total votes.

It will be functional similar to your suggestion, that's true. It's just a different way of showing it. The benefit of showing it this way that it could be easier to identify a hot topic, one that has attracted many votes, both up and down.
