Puzzle by Jolla? [answered]

First of all I would like to see Jolla produce a brain module for puzzlephone, one adapted to the needs and wishes of sailfish OS users.

Yeah, that is cool news. But there is no information on what that will mean. I will not buy a Puzzlephone now (it seems that they will have a tough job reaching the funding goal) without knowing what I will get in concerns of SailfishOS support. It is pretty much the same as with the Fairphone 2 - we have heard of too many partnerships and have received too little as deliverable: Angry Birds TOH, Younited integration, Intex phone...

What do you mean? What exactly would you want to know?
Concerning the goal, as far as I understood it they will deliver the Phones no matter whether the goal is achieved or not. They claimed R&D is financed by the 1.5 million or so they got by EU, TEKES and Business angels. So it should only be the production.

The announcement says that Jolla supports porting of the "community version of SailfishOS". I do not read that as if Jolla will port it, but they will support the community to do so (as in "community collaboration"). That would be like other third-party devices running SailfishOS now: without Android support, Exchange, and other proprietary components. Am I misunderstanding this announcement?

@ramue, the Exchange Active Sync has been rewritten by Jolla, they dropped the earlier version due to licensing and made their own - if I understood it correctly, so the Exchange sync should work on the ported versions of SFOS. But the more other companies go with SFOS the more it gets native apps and attention and thus slowly eliminating the need for Android support, which is nice. :)

I would wait for a puzzlephone right now if I knew that I could swap the brain for a Jolla one later.

dac ( 2015-11-07 14:52:33 +0300 )editI am guessing that the PuzzlePhone will be based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC which would make things really easy for Jolla. The JP-1301 (the current Jolla Phone) is based on the same SoC family and there is good support for the hardware in Sailfish OS.
The downside of using that family of SoC is that there is only limited support for open-source drivers. That fact could make the original PuzzlePhone Brain a less attractive offer (for some). A brain module from Jolla could change the rules of the game to the better.
If the PuzzlePhone gets open-source-friendly hardware then my request is simply redundant. Then the only thing needed would be an official Sailfish port.

It consists of modules. Spine (screen, sensors, etc...), Brain (CPU, Radio, Flash, RAM, etc...) and Heart (Battery, secondary electronics). It should as Idea make upgrades easier and produce less waste.
