What does "community collaboration/version" actually mean?

Both PuzzlePhone and Fairphone have released that they are taking Sailfish as their optional OS. In both cases they talk about "community collaboration" but at least I am not sure if it means fully supported version of Sailfish by Jolla or just an other ported version without Android support etc.

Many people in community would be interested to acquire one or the other of these devices if we would know more. Our Jolla 1 devices are not getting any younger and we would need some information about the next generation of Sailfish and Jolla phones (Jolla 2). Or is the future in Intex phones?

It means, Jolla and Puzzlephone will help those community devs that (might) want to start porting SailfishOS. For example on IRC channel.

It would mean that only Jolla 2 or maybe some future Intex phone could be the replacement for Jolla 1. In that case I wouldn´t be interested to invest to Puzzlephone or Fairphone 2 atleast yet...

Indeed, the puzzlephone would be great but comes in approx a year. The fairphone in Jan 16 but I don't by when sf 2.0 is running on it. I would buy the fairphone immediatly when I can install somehow sf 2.0

If community members do most of the work then the leap of faith becomes a lesser risk for the companies. The voluntary work thus increases hope for the community.

When the volunteers reach the rendezvous-point the companies will be there too.

You see, that island is already on the map. It is right at the border of corporate agreements. Where signed secrets end and the free seas begin.

@FJVA - Well, poetic or not there's still a problem of understanding words. Intex is a partner. Puzzlephone and fairphone are not. The difference is that a partner pays to have a Jolla pilot onboard. Fairphone and Puzzlephone want to have Jolla onboard but have not payed (yet).

So the situation for the two crowdfunding companies is that right now they have to take a long jump with a high risk. With voluntary work that jump gets smaller, the risk too. Both companies have promised to deliver an android phone. With limited funds they have to focus on bringing their products to market.

if the Jolla community helps to make the jump shorter then the chances increase for them to offer sailfish as an alternative operating system. ...and we have a better chance of getting a choice of sailfish phones.

NOTE that I've promoted both fairphone and puzzlephone on this forum. ...and I'm a firm believer in Jolla.

@vattuvarg, however we know that sledges and vakkov are working on the fairphone port, i imagine its a similar situation with the Puzzlephone.

You're right though, the hardware companies involved don't want to present it as a fully supported solution due to increased costs.

Jolla seems to have added a new possibility with "community collaboration". Not quite a partnership but something that makes me optimistic, nonetheless. At this time of the year even miracles can happen.

@r0kk3rz - knowing how good the community hackers are I'm not just optimistic but rather cheerful when thinking about the future.
