I had to reboot, but this seems to solve the issue.

I got my new phone, and upgraded to 1.1.1.27 I still saw squares and no Hebrew letters. I ran the copy and rebooted, still hebrew appears as squares.

@niv - I tried this one from Schturman https://openrepos.net/content/schturman/hebrew-vkb-2-arrows-toggle-en-he

After installing it, I went to Terminal and entered killall maliit-server - which initially didn't help, so I rebooted the phone. The Hebrew keyboard and language now shows and I can see characters not boxes - so I'd say there is support for you.(I don't speak or write in Hebrew, I'm just trying to help you).

Before restarting maliit or rebooting phone; image description

Hope this helps you.

  1. What does it take to have this support enabled by default?
  2. I ended up copying the Culmus fonts and rebooting. Is there a way to refresh the list of installed fonts short of reboot? With X I would do that with 'fc-cache' (I tried it. Didn't work).
  3. I note that there are common font families with better Hebrew support than Droid. Deja-Vu comes to mind.

(Same answer as i gave at https://together.jolla.com/question/7555/arabic-characters-not-shown-in-email/) In order to use Droid Sans as fonts for hebrew — copy settings from root with follow command and reboot:

cp /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/55-droid-s* /etc/fonts/conf.avail/

reboot

Maybe installing hebrew keyboard helps? https://openrepos.net/content/schturman/hebrew-vkb

1st) it did not, but Shturman fixed it in new version (as font it self was not copied properly). 2nd) It's not for keyboard layout but to see hebrew font 3rd)I prefer to use builtin out of box solution with font on device, instead of installing new fonts(it's already there, why not use it?)

@ZogG unfortunately your workaround didn't work on my device :( any ideas?

tad ( 2014-09-20 14:40:12 +0300 )edit

@tad, last time i did it was on one of first updates, i do not use Jolla except as candy crush so i do not really tried it after updates. I think you should ping Shturman as he uses it as everyday device afaik and he is from israel as well

It's very much WIP but Schturman on TMO found that adding FreeSans worked: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1408245&postcount=106

It would be very nice if Jolla added an 'official' font, but in the mean time this is a good interim solution.

Thanks to this post I can now read Hebrew text on my Jolla: downloaded an app from OpenRepos (Schturman) and it works!

FreeSans (and the rest of the fonts in that family) are readable but generally ugly. Please opt to use something better (at least for Hebrew). They'll make your eyes hurt in the long run.

I just followed the instruction for the VKB installation in the above link and I also got Hebrew fonts displaying correctly in SMS.

Thank you!

This is the same problem as with Arabic, at https://together.jolla.com/question/7555/arabic-characters-not-shown-in-email/

There are actually fonts for both Arabic and Hebrew installed, but due to an unknown fontconfig(?) problem, they're ignored for the character fallback. There is a very technical hack to get them working (posted on the arabic thread), but no proper solution yet. I have a suspicion that we may need to update fontconfig, but I haven't investigated the issue very far.

The font I'm referring to is Droid Sans Hebrew. Are there other suggestions for an openly licensed hebrew font that would be preferable?

How about Nachlieli CLM from the Culmus Project? http://culmus.sourceforge.net/ See also this reference chart: http://opensiddur.org/wp-content/fonts/Open-Siddur-Project-Hebrew-Font-Pack-comparison-v.1.15.pdf A general nice overview: http://opensiddur.org/tools/fonts/

I'm not sure that they are the best. One good point for them is that they appear in the configuration and hence require no further mucking with font-config. That said, I fail to understand why the existing font-config configuration does not configure Droid-Sans-Hebrew for sans-serif.

Other font families:

Is there any fixing progress with this? I just stumbled on this bug as well. What exactly is the problem with Droid Sans? It can't be used with the version of fontconfig in Sailfish?

DejaVu is a good example too.
