Because Jolla had financial problems and the manufacturer has gone wild.

There are also some discussions about that topic (best one here), and statements from Jolla that their production partner is doing it without their permission. (See here, search for production partner.)

Also be aware that some of the offers are shipped (if they are shipped) with android as OS. Read the above mentioned TJC discussion for more info.

It's not Japanese, is't Chinese.

This happens because some people think they can gain money out of it. ;)

No.This happens because some people think they can gain money out of it.

The Taobao thing happens because some people think they can order a production of 1000+ tablets and not pay for it, and they think they can get away with it without consequences.

Of whom are you talking about? And which possible details you know about the details of Jollas hardware business?

I think there are wild legal speculations and a lot of frustration here. Note that those of you who order the tablet produced for jolla by the chinese manufacturer gone wild and import it into Europe, they would theoretically expose themselves probably to contribution to trademark and copyright infringements. This would of course only materialize if jolla would follow up. I don't believe this will happen. That's why I called it "theoretic". I'm not affiliated with jolla. I just don't want you to draw conclusions from some entity in China doing things that are not particularly straight forward. But I guess it isn't worthwhile for jolla to go after the manufacturer either, especially in China. If I were jolla, I would look for a different manufacturer for the remaining tablets to deliver and perhaps negotiate a joint venture

@PatsJolla, you are right, I am just speculating. So is @Yo. You can choose which speculation you find more likely. I do not know what @Yo has to back up his, but I have at least two things to back up mine:

  1. Occam's razor. Only an uncritical Jolla worshipper can.assume that a Chinese manufacturer would go through the bother of copying some obscure company's product for a financial gain. It is much more likely that those units were produced for Jolla on Jolla's order.

  2. I used to be in a hardware production business myself. We used to run on a shoe string margin, less than 3%. If someone ordered a 1000 units and did not pay for them for 3 months, all the time pulling wool over of our eyes with promises of the money coming "soon", that would have put us in a seriously dire situation. Trying to get rid of that burden by selling it at production cost to someone else would be a natural thing to do.

@pichlo, I'm only speculating very vaguely. My statements were:

  • Jolla has financial problems (fact as you can see by news reports)
  • The manufacturer has gone wild (fact - if you interpret "going wild" as selling the tablets without having permission or informing the ordering party - as you can see by them selling the tablets and jollas statement to that (i linked to it))
  • It's Chinese (fact - see the language)
  • This happens because someone thinks he can gain money from it (speculative, nearly fact, because in the vast majority of times somone sells something he does this because he hopes to gain money from it. There is also an emoticon after this answer indicating that this answer is of course a little silly because it just "explains" the principle of selling something. I know that every other answer to this question would be pure speculation so I did not give one.)
