Screenshots in silica reference documentation

asked 2016-01-09 00:37:22 +0300

There are many small examples in the reference documentation, but no screenshots.

I understand that other reference documentation ( like http://doc.qt.io/ ) often has no screenshots, but since literally all of silica is GUI stuff it would be nice to have the odd image to show an application of whatever the particular element being discussed is.

Just a suggestion - what about publishing the source of the documentation (say on GitHub) so that non-Jolla people can help improving it ? This is hardly the only request for improving the docs - and most of these requests have been ignored so far, while I'm sure there would be some people willing to help with the improvements themselves, if it was possible. :)

some of the components are closed-source

Well, there's this: https://github.com/dm8tbr/sailfishsilica-qt5
That guy collected the "clearly open source" bits of Silica from his phone. Finding his repo has helped me a lot recently, since you can see all the attributes the components have.

@virgi26: Well, components being closed source does not preclude their documentation being open-source so that other can contribute to it (of course once the changes are reviewed by Jolla maintainers).

As for Silica being closed source - I think this is (as other closed source components in Sailfish OS) a huge mistake. So far I have not seen a single instance where all these closed source parts actually helped Sailfish OS, just many instances where they are actively harming Sailfish OS (pissed of open source developers, bugs and simple feature requests being ignored for years, open source distro projects like Nemo not being able to contribute and having to write their own GUI from scratch, etc.).

I completely understand your question, so +1

Did you check the Sailfish Silica Component Gallery in de Qt Creator SDK? There you can find the code of the silica components and after build and deploy find the results in the emulator...

Thanks, that's useful, but still not as useful as images/gifs would be when you don't know what you are looking for yet :)
