Hello all!

FOSDEM gives great chance to meet face to face, have a chinwag, discuss state of affairs and clear the air in general :)

Every year we had a BoF and community dinner in Brussels on the FOSDEM's Saturday evening, let's do this again, on the 30th of January!

Please upvote if you will attend at each respective event, and I sure hope to see you there :)

UPDATE:

We've reserved the BoF session room. If you're at FOSDEM on Saturday we'll be in room H.3227 at 17:00 for an hour or so. Please come along!

PS: To those unaware of FOSDEM, here's a glimpse into one of its many rooms, swarmed with Sailfish OS friends: AsteroidOS and NemoTablet presented by our fellow community members, Fairphone 2 hacking, and Carsten's future-is-here Cuteboot talk as well https://fosdem.org/2016/schedule/track/embedded,_mobile_and_automotive! And here's the full bouquet: https://fosdem.org/2016/schedule/tracks/

I came last year to FOSDEM and to Jolla dinner, it was really great. Sadly, I cannot make it this year :'( Got to move in a new place at that time. Will certainly get a better atmosphere there though to hack better than at my current place :p

I'll be giving a couple of talks at FOSDEM and I am not sure whether I'll be able to make it to any of the Jolla community events, but it will be great to be around other Jolla users at FOSDEM regardless!

Community round-table

(Upvote if you'd be coming)

We've reserved the BoF session room. If you're at FOSDEM on Saturday we'll be in room H.3227 at 17:00 for an hour or so. Please come along!

We'll be in the BoF (birds of feather) classroom for anything what's on your heart (where's my tablet question will be addressed next week ;)) and how to join forces together (lots of inspiration from http://merproject.org/meetings/mer-meeting/2015/mer-meeting.2015-12-17-14.30.html)

Please comment with a topic proposal

The classroom will be reserved Saturday morning, follow comments here for definite time and place (ideally we should aim to start 4:30pm)

So far the topics to iron out together are:
* Community translation service
* Harbour QA community engagement
* OS testing
* Code contributions
* Keyboard layout contributions

Quick summary of what was discussed

Community translation service

The community translation service is close to be ready. We discussed about the process of contributing a translation. Details are below:

  1. Jolla sends translations to the community pootle a bit ahead (2 weeks) of the release
  2. We (the community) translate
  3. Translation are reviewed by "reviewers", that are also community members
  4. When the deadline is met, Jolla compile the translated strings and integrates them in the release
  5. Untranslated strings can still be translated and reviewed for the next release

About the number of reviewers, it should be the best to have two reviewers per "main" language, one reviewer can be accepted for other languages.

Harbour QA community engagement

The fact is that there is no much people doing QA @ Jolla. Jolla would like to have a community effort to help with QA. There are scripts to check for forbidden API, but for the actual testing part, a manual effort is required.

We (the community) do not not know about QA, so Jolla need to document that part (how to execute test plans etc.).

OS testing

Same as previously, since the workforce at Jolla is reduced, we can take part for the new updates testing. Anybody who want to test can subscribe to be a cbeta member. You will probably need a new phone to do the test though.

TODO: how to be a cbeta ?

Code contribution

Most of the code is in open-source repositories (git.merproject.org). However, the bug will be triggered from an application, so from the GUI. You might still be able to dig to the call (in QML files) and then to the library.

We lack of documentation to do this. So Jolla could help us by setting a wiki page.

Community dinner

(Upvote if you'd be coming)

UPDATE: The table has been booked! We have a reservation for 19:00 tonight. See you all there!

Last year we landed in http://www.restaurantvincent.com and it was a jolly! Why not repeat that? The place has a nice marine theme to it :) Menu options were within range of 30-43€ (vegetarian option 47.50€), but we can also go à la carte.
