Compose keyboard characters

Is there a function in Sailfish like the compose button in Linux?

I have an English bluetooth (Rii 508 mini pocket, or something like that), and need to be able to enter the Danish letters: æ,ø,å,Æ,Ø,Å.

I would like to be able to press something like Alt+e for æ, Alt+a for å, Alt+o for ø and so on.

Any idea how to do that?

I'm using Sailfish 2.0.0.10

You can select layout for hardware keyboards in settings and the danish one should support the letters you want.

Yes, but as my keyboard is in English, a lot of keys changes values compared to what's printed on them.

What I would like, is to keep my layout and have access to the national characters in some way.

The characters shown on the pages of http://graphemica.com/unicode/characters copy to clipboard in the browser by press, hold, Copy to clipboard. Then you can paste them whenever they are needed (and if no clipboard bugs are exhibiting their hard-to-reproduce symptoms). Unfortunately the vkb and clipboard's implementation don't extend to things like multiple key-like paste buttons for frequent paste items, so it's unlikely to be practical.
