A Jolla Phone 2?

I'm not asking which ingredients you want ..there are enough threads for it. Of course things like spare batteries are a must..better hardware is automatically thanks to technical evolution.

But Jolla as the hardware seller...or the new Jolla hardware company that we never heard of since it was founded (or isn't it still?)

I personally would like to buy it. Screensize could even stay but I would like that the TOH stays just to have possibilities in comparison to other phone makers.

I think Jolla/ Jolla Hardware should always make one top class phone as reference design, similar to Google Nexus devices..just more unlike and therefore better ;-)

I would be customer again!

If "I would be customer again!" is the question (it is the question, is it?) my answer would be: 42.

Anything else? Ah, well, don't do drugs ...

unfortunately Jolla is so bankrupt they can not even offer spare batteries. And the Jolla Shop looks like soviet union: Empty shelves, everything on display is sold out. Batteries (akkumulators) are not even on display. Good old communismn..... but I like my Jolla anyways. Many design flaws, ok, but not that bad like the Ubuntu phone (which is really far away even from beta testing, IMHO).

So what is the question at all? If Jolla failed to make it? Sure. Now I have it I like it and use it up. No spare parts? Prone to become garbage. What is different from chinese way doing it??

42, I can not see anything that makes sense.

I bought my Jolla about 1 month ago. I have switched from Galaxy Note 2. Although worse specs its software is brilliant. I would definitly buy another jolla as soon as it is released. I really hope that Jolla company will be able to outlast in os battle, because their child, Sailfish, is the most wonderful operating mobile system in the world.

I would buy any new model that comes with SailfishOS pre-installed. (No "community-ports", that is.) It wouldn't make any difference if it's made by Jolla or any other company. There's just no alternative if you're looking for a GNU/Linux phone with a desktop-like distribution. I once thought Ubuntu would be an alternative to Sailfish - until I tried it. Although it's hard to believe for those who complain how many features Sailfish lacks in comparison to Android and iOS: Ubuntu is even worse. So: Yes, I buy a new phone from Jolla,

Yes, I had a Jolla between 12/2014 and 02/2016, it was stolen. :( I loved the OS and the Phone, but I want a phone with modern spec.

I'm interesting in Intex model or similar. Turing ou Fairephone 2 are too expensive for me. I use currently my Open C with Firefox OS, originally I bought it for test. And I'm waiting a new phone, modern with alternative OS (Tizen or Sailfish OS, I don't want Ubuntu Touch). The price should be reasonable too.

I think Jolla should produce a new phone for European or "Occident" market. It's important to have a good developers activity.

I think Tizen will not appear on a phone. So far Samsung is using it only on TVs etc. I have seen it working already it is quite fast in TVs definately better than the old system

PatsJolla ( 2016-03-12 00:13:03 +0300 )edit

Too late, Samsung released two phones with Tizen last year (Z1 and Z3) but only in South-Estearn-Asia. Then Samsung sold 3 millions of these phones, it's a big number. Some leaks seemed predict refresh of these phones this year and a more powerful phone for European market too.

I think Tizen should be a well alternative and it is not dead for phone market. ;)

Renault ( 2016-03-12 00:34:15 +0300 )edit

Oh nice. I would like to test one! I didn't hear about that at all. I had a Bada Wave once was ok but had extremely many bugs not comparerable with SFOS at all. I always hoped Tizen would be my next one afterwards but it took too long...but with SFOS I waited for the better variant.

PatsJolla ( 2016-03-12 00:36:37 +0300 )edit

Why would anyone steal Jolla phone because according to average Android and iOS users, Sailfish is next to impossible to use and learn ;)

Definitely. I love my Jolla. I can't imagine moving to Apple products, and Windows is dying a slow death. If I had to change from my Jolla it would be to Android, but I would not like it.

Kidding why? He just prefers pre-1.1.9. UI so what? I also missing some functionality from old UI and thus I have to use patches which is quite annoying. And multitasking is indeed very strange (if functional at all) with SFOS 2.0 on phone.

yes kidding because only by just thinking that multitasking no works by himself and make from it a general rule for all is a joke! make a huge strike because only you missed a part of ui where other are satisfied is not mature.
I make myself not a mess all over the world because i can't synchronize my calendar and contact with my device because a bug. But you know that is for me life-important, and i adapt my self until it works!
there are more things important than just some ui problems and a multitasking which is probably mistaken through a misuse or a wrong configuration (which could maybe solved if it's communicated to jolla or community).

Uitukka (1.1.0) killed multitasking, not Eineheminlampi (1.1.9).

If anything, some of that was fixed to some extent in Saimaa (2.0.0).

The answer is NO. Jolla team is obsolete. They came from Nokia, that were lazy people, remember the symbian, meego, maemo,... all models were outdated before release , and in alpha state. To me the problem is with Jolla executives, they don't know how to be competitve, and they are very slow executing. There's nothing to do when you are ambitious but you don't have humility. And they need more humility. To start a project like jolla, you need help! even apple realized after first iphone that they needed the community (developers) so they build a platform that make developers comfortable. So for customers. If you focus on your product, you will have customers and partners (developers) satisfied. Ask Lastu if they are happy with jolla accessories sales? the most probable answer will be: psse! Yes may they sold a bunch of cases... but how will you explain to those backers that already purchased the case for tablet that will serve for nothing? How will they look at lastu...? anyway Jolla executives are the crap of the startups ecosystem, they are LAZY amateurs. What about Jolla?nothing If you put an american executive, with american team maybe will work... Look at how other crowdfounding projects were managed.. for example Robin (a crowdfounded smartphone)

The problem is that the founding they said they got, nobody knows were came from. And if it is used, will be to pay the workers they fired. Forget the tablet, TOHs and more phones, Jolla is dead, and SailfishOS will be like Maemo, in the best of the situations. If there's an updated will be community driven... Time will tell

Besides these considerations, I'am working since last two months in a claim. In form of suing Jolla. European laws, are very strict and protective to customers, since I will pay all the expenses if you are interested in joining the claim you can contact me at… daristraits@protonmail.com

Cheers

You have an interesting point of view, could be that you are right an Jolla is about to die soon, who knows. But for me it doesn't look like it. It is not so easy as before but the next update 2.0.1.7 is already out for early accessors and will be soon for the rest. And lazy they are for sure not, I guess you don't see what it takes to be a company with startup background. Just for comparison I will stay within the mobile branch:

Example 1: Samsung Bada Some may know it, in 2010 Samsung brought its own Linux based phones on the Market, with Bada System, Bada was as alternative to Android and iOS marketed there were huge campaings for developers and the hardware was quite good. I own the Bada phone Wave myself and it was top at the time. Some details: AMOLED Screen, Battery changeable, good cam, TV out !! through headset connector!, simple using setting like separate cam button to just from locked phone directly into making a picture by holding the key longer... Now the set back: Updates, a complete disaster there where three versions of Bada available: 1.0, 1.2 and the final 2.0 every version changed something so massively that apps and widgets didn't work any more correctly, for example in 2.0 you can not use any widget as the widget part of the gui is constantly crashing, in 1.0 email calendars and some apps from the store (partially the samsung app store itsself) could not be used. The browser was a mess... There was NEVER an alternative store like openrepos /warehouse. Apps/Games that came with 1.0 disappeared from the phone after the update seems like samsung didnt want to pay for license or something similar. Again the hardware was quite good but the software could give you grey hairs. So what happened in the end? Bada died. I think Samsung brought 5 or 6 phones with bada to the market but only the Wave 1 was good the others were all less good equipped. Not a smart move if you see how many people now a days only but because of specs...

PatsJolla ( 2016-01-26 18:19:18 +0300 )edit

you are giving me an example of lazy company as Nokia was... They were slow and without focus... They tried to copy, but they didn't understood the core... Jolla comes from the same heritage... but with less money... so the answer is clear. They will disapear, as well as the tablet and money from the customers and backers. Too late now! the managers of Jolla are as bad as the ones that managed Bada, Meego, Nokia, etc... In a startup world, doesn't matter the idea (10%) , matters the execution (90%) Look at the executives from Robin! a good example that without no much money, and a crownfounded project could be well executed. because they were focused.

2/2 Now compare this updates (3 in total) with Sailfish Updates: I recently resetted my phone and needed to come back from 1.0.0.5 to 2.0.0.10 you get around 5 major updates, but if you were following the usual update cycles on time you actually got around 16 or 17 updates. NO, I repeat NO other OS distributor of ANY Mobile OS has ever done something like this in such a short time.

Example 2: Blackberry I own a Blackberry Bold 9900 the old flagship before the break in Blackberry came, quite good phone I like the hardware keyboard, battery is good, cam too, store has some quality apps and whatsapp is also supported with a native app (makes it easy to adapt to the phone). Set back? yes it has OS 7.1 which needs a complete server infrastructure from RIM/Blackberry to work otherwise you cannot use the built in email client or the browser. It is made for companies not for private users. Update to BBOS 10? forget it.

Example 3: Our favourite: Microsoft Not much to say except for Win Phone 7 and 8 somebody remembers? The first Nokia Lumias? You bought one just to find out that the phones with win 7 system are outdated after purchase and will not get any more updates only after huge public "scandals" Microsoft made an update to 7.5 to give users some features and updates. Official statement the technique of the new phone version is substantially different, yes sure.

So now I would like to ask for what are you suing Jolla, I hope not for crowd-funding the tablet via indiegogo, if yes your lawyers should check if you maybe fall under the classical investor clause - you gave money in hope but you never made a contract, in comparison to the jolla.store customers who pre-ordered and pre-paid the phone, they have made a contract with Jolla...

PatsJolla ( 2016-01-26 18:32:55 +0300 )edit

You keep giving me fails. I know that big companies also have epic fails. Because they misunderstand the business. Suing Jolla, is about what was the purpouse of the crowdfounding, and here is the point. They recognized they used the money for the OS, after long months saying it was a matter of the display... but the claim is much more complex, and after all they used a platform to get money, they used a platform of payments independent of indiegogo(and that indiegogo uses) that has a estrict terms and conditions, so they will have to face not only my sue. Because we will contact each part of the proces, and many partners will be called... In other words They LIED, they said that was for a tablet not for an OS. And sure backing is a risk, but we will demonstrate that they LIED, so the crowdfounding terms are not appliable. We have collected all tweets, posts, communications from JollaHQ, and Jolla. It's not a matter of money now, it's a matter of honor, and we'll go deep...

You can not say that Samsung is a lazy company, or has lazy managers. The throw out so my phones on the market it's ridiculous. Just search for Samsung Galaxy Phone which result you will get ? Apart fro the famous S models you will also get the Alpha models (more close to iphone by materials) or the Ace models which are beginner phone or one of the 100 other models that are already background noise on the market.

They are fast but they are just looking for fast profit not for long term userbase. Managing a good Software Ecosystem is much harder than just throwing out new hardware every 3 to 4 months. Ask Apple. Nokia made some mistakes like letting the OS groups fight against each other instead of using synergy effects and the never had the idea of a app-store concept until it was too late and they became a me too follower with the ovi store.

PatsJolla ( 2016-01-26 18:57:05 +0300 )edit

throwing lots of phones does not says nothing. Ask apple, just now, they have more than one model. But all with the same hardware. Almost. Samsung, Nokia,...They are lazy in thinking and building. Arriving late does not matter. Google was 14th search engine that came live. Facebook was not the first social network,... Nokia was lazy because they had a dominant position, and not only in market share, also in cash. They were a lazy and old executives, without ambitions. Jolla, they dreamed, was nice, they talked a lot, they promised a lot, they executed very bad. They were out of focus. In spanish we say: "Quien mucho abarca poco aprieta" They started with a launcher and OS, then the tablet, now the ventures, ... at last what it is true is that they have NO developers (look at the store), Unsatisfied customers, NO TABLET, NO TOH, ... NO partners...

Actually with your last answer you made very clear that Apple is the only phone manufacturer who makes profit with their phones AND the software all others either make losses (Samsung Mobile in Hardware compared to Google Android where Google earns with every sold phone) but e ven Google made loss with their hardware remember Motorola? bought by them to produce the Nexus Models but already the very next Nexus model came from LG, I Think. And now? Motorola belongs to Lenovo..Google wanted the patents nothing else. In the past there were so many companies: Siemens, Benq, Ericson (now part of Sony), Alcatel, Sagem, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Palm, Sharp....who is left? who didn't fail? at least partially?

I wish you look for your suing but I would be upset if this kind of suing brings down one of the last free OS that has actual hardware were it runs on.

@darius And your reason for being here is... what? Just buy an iPhone and be happy! @PatsJolla You make some valid and very interesting points; that Jolla compares quite favourably with companies a thousand times their size really says it all.

As someone who has owned and loved the Nokia N900, and who still happily uses a four year old Nokia N9, I am insulted by the OP's suggestion that these were the products of "lazy" people - they were both revolutionary handsets of the highest quality, hardware and software. If one is unable to appreciate these legendary devices then it's probably better to remain in the Apple/Google comfort-zone.
