either have it so there is an extra option when long pressing a link to open in background tab or change the option to be open in background tab.

possibly a potential help for the forgetting scroll position problem mentioned here https://together.jolla.com/question/373/tab-reloading-browser-settings/

@ymb please provide use case of actual value of load in background, why not load on select, or open but do not navigate to, etc implentation could vary widely so its better to describe what you are trying to accomplish and why you think people would use it once its available.

@DarkTuring how about going to a news site, opening the tabs of the news from today which you find interesting... i mean thats just one use case, but come on... are you telling me you dont miss this feature - everyday?

@misc11 I think it's a matter of habit. One of the first addons I installed here in Fx/Android was TabsInForeground and I have Fx desktop set that way. That's my preference 99% of the time. But of course a long-tap option would be best.

We have been thinking about this. We are considering adding a setting for user to define if opening links to new tabs, either by long-tapping or from tab page, would open them to foreground/or background.

@veskuh, please take also into consideration: https://together.jolla.com/question/2202/browser-back-and-tab-change-gestures/ and https://together.jolla.com/question/5146/make-it-easier-to-close-current-tab/. I know, you commented one of them, I just want to keep these threads linked somehow.

Maybe it might also be worth considering how to open browser tabs straight to the background from links in other apps too (e.g. twitter client). Even with N9 this could be achieved by peeking to home screen while the link was opening, this way the new browser window couldn't get the focus and just opened in the background. With Jolla, the launching application (i.e. browser) is always launched on top of everything even if the user is peeking during app launch.

Any progress (or hack to implement this myself)? I really miss the function to open links in the background.

Are you still thinking about this?

I find it very annoying to have to switch back to the original tab all the time.

My normal browsing behaviour:
I am reading on a web page/forum index/search result listing and find some interesting references/forum posts/search results that I want to look into.
If I am done with the page that I am currently reading, I just click the link and jump to the next page but normally there are multiple links to follow and not all of them at the end of the page. Thus I want to continue reading on the active web page.
I can not think of any occasion when it would have been useful for me to open a link in a foreground tab. However, opening links in background tabs is something that I do all the time.

Thats also pretty much how I am normally using a browser and I have been sometimes using the Android Opera due to "open in background" support. So I would also appreciate if "open in background" support is added to the default Sailfish OS browser.

Is the code for the browser public? This should be an easy fix. Also shameless bump

Code is indeed free software and development is made public by Jolla employees in Github.
