Hi there,

BlackBerry now offers his famous virtual keyboard as Android apk. Is it possible to set these keyboard as default in SailfishOS? If yes, how it works?

Thanks...

The virtual keyboard layouts are written in QML for Sailfish, so almost everything is possible. I am not familiar with that keyboard (I have a BB Playbook but that keyboard was not special I think), but if you have some video about how it works post it here.

I use the BB OS 10 often for my freelance work. I love the keyboard of the BB, with Jolla's own I'm not so happy (but also with Android and iOS). As I know the Playbook has never seen BB OS 10? But I'm not sure about it. Fleksy is also a option as Android apk. It's near to the BB virtual keyboard.

Are you refering to this kind of auto completition? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6iNAeXson8

I agree with pema. I have also Z10 and the keyboard is much better (never used this auto-complete staff) than the one in SFOS.

Okay, but what feature do you miss from the SFOS keyboard? The adaptive movement of the key areas?

It's the way of swiping the words, the multi language support without to change the keyboard layout, the AI based learning of words which I write and often use. You are simply faster and more correct in typing your words then with another virtual keyboard.

Certainly not by just installing an APK - this would need some multi-windowed Android emulation and I don't think we'll ever see something like this (lot's of work to implement, low user demand, security/privacy risk). It also wouldn't make much sense to run Alien Dalvik just for a virtual keyboard (in my opinion)...

There are some custom keyboard available at OpenRepos.net (like OKBoard, Dolphin Keyboard) and many various layouts. To re-create something similar to the great but closed-source BB-keyboard wouldn't be an easy task though.

As I understand correctly I can use the BlackBerry virtual keyboard only for Android apps (without a bigger change in the system)? If I will use it on SFOS completely I have to use a virtual keyboard from OpenRepros for example?

Not exactly. The Android keyboard is deactivated in Alien Dalvik (Android support). So you use the Sailfish keyboard in Android apps, incl. copy/paste features which works very well. See this screenshot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ns6p506g7o3zikp/Screenshot-16-02-03-22-07-28.png?dl=0

I don't know if it is possible to use Android keyboards in Android apps and haven't heard of anyone trying. Maybe it's possible to change something in /opt/alien/system/build.prob - but I really don't know :-/
