Turing Phone / Sony Xperia X and NFC in SailfishOS

I recently heard about the Turing Phone ( https://www.turingphone.com/) and the specs indicate that it will be powered by SailfishOS 2.0 (although with their own Turing Æmæth UI).

This looks very promising and somehow right in the spirit of SailfishOS (privacy and user control while the FairPhone 2 as user-tinkering and Open spirit).

One detail bugged me though: specs also indicate NFC (NXP) whereas it is obviously not supported until now (reserved for TOH on the Jolla Phone and absent from the Jolla Tablet).

Will there be an API that allows us to develop NFC applications? If yes, is it a SailfishOS provided interface or is it specific to the Turing Phone?

Edit : Question remains open with the Sony Xperia X F5121 (the exact reference supported by Jolla) containing the hardware for NFC. In this case, will NFC be available as an official Sailfish OS API ? Will it be available (additionally or only) to Android application ? Will it be unofficially accessible through libnfc or another standard API ?

I am very, extraordinarily sceptical about the Turing. The website looks more like a hoax - compare that to the faiphone. Also, I dont see a lot of PR about it from Jolla. They dont seem to be flattered too much. The whole Turing venture deserves some serious upfront research. That being said, your technical questions may never really have a practical application.

@kryca checks done, after which I dropped the whole case from my blog for now. Skeptic like you, but will get back to it if the case requires attention in our community. Answer by @t-lo below is definitely worth a read, being one part of this story.

i would like to see NFC support, seems the chip is deactivated with current software suite 2.0.4.14 and Turing Device Adaptation 0.0.2.6 and i cant turn it on using Android apps which already support NFC, it would be nice to get Alien Dalvik to support NFC then develop it native support later.

Sorry to abuse an Answer for this, but be very careful with the Turing phone.

About three years ago the same team hit the press with the "Quasar 4" phone: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/qsalpha-quasar-iv#/ (looks familiar?).

Compare the team of the Quasar 4 to the Turing Robotics Corp. speakers in this article on the Turing phone: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/qsalpha-quasar-iv#/ - same names, same team.

Be reasonably cautious with them, the internet is not a safe place to spend money :)

@t-lo good observation but that does not mean that they are bad. seems to be that the qsalpha go to the turing robotic industrie. did you saw their FB Page? https://www.facebook.com/QSAlpha. Seems to be that they developed the phone shortly, and is not finalised. Seems that they are still active, and aware to their backers. but some of them claim for refund. don't know if they got it, but despite of this there is not so much protest against the team...

I'm just speaking up because quite a few Jolla fans got upset with how the Jolla Tablet Indiegogo went - which, imho, failed for completely valid "natural" reasons (well, and Jolla's non-communication made it look worse than it was). There's a risk with every crowd funding, and even though the Turing phone claims "pre-sales" I'd expect a significant risk with that. Apparently people cannot handle risk assessment and mistake those venture capital requests for an online shop.

Well, my Jolla phone certainly still works great and I didn't intended to preorder the Turing (nor a FairPhone 2 for that matter).

My question was only to know if SailfishOS was to gain a NFC API for the devices that would support it.

i have invested in the Jolla Tablet and that failed never saw the tablet, its unfortunate and it was a bad business decision by Jolla to enter the tablet market (which by then was littered with corpses). also the spent a lit of time developing tablet support which shoukd have been used to iron out and improve the phone OS amounting to another missed opportunity.

Turing on the other hand just wants to make secure phones for which there is a huge market and demand and where you cannot use Android, Blackberry, or Apple OS, so i see it as an opportunity for Jolla to create the most trustworthy and secure OS out there - or at least be a partner in that space.
