Select contact numbers based on their attributes

In the Contacts app each telephone number can be set of certain type, ie.:

  • Mobile
  • Pager
  • Fax
  • Video

If a contact phone number has such a attribute set, that shall be taken into account in:

  • the Phone app, when suggesting user contact's number to call. There is no point to present pager tagged number in Phone app, the same goes for fax one, as such numbers do not serve the purpose of the app functionality,
  • the Messaging app, when selecting a contact with multiple phone numbers - only untagged or mobile tagged numbers shall be presented while selecting SMS/MMS recipient. Ie. fax number does not make sense in this context.

So my proposal is as follows: depending on the context take into account only numbers that are either not tagged or tagged accordingly to application functionality.

I thought about this very thing just today. Was typing a new SMS and selecting a recipient from contacts and was surprised that all numbers were offered, not just mobile numbers.

On the other hand, you can, at least here in the UK, subscribe to an SMS service on your landline. Not sure how exactly it works as I never bothered but the point is, you can send/receive SMS from/to numbers other than mobile.

Fair enough. I suspected that SMS/MMS might be available for land line phones. I find such use case pretty limited, at the same time usability benefits from doing as suggested would be quite nice.

I agree that this should be working like described. It puts a little bit of pressure to users phonebook management. One needs then really have each mobile number stored as mobile number. Must admit that my phonebook might have someone's mobile number stored as home or work number...
