Hi Sailors,

I'm wondering how are you earning some moneys? Jolla phone is quite old now so not sure you are selling an important quantity. Are all your revenues based on licensing SailfishOS?

Thanks

AFAIK they are funded by investors and do not get any profits other than that.

ok .. so they are completely (not really according to @avhakola) dependent of their investors ... who can move out at any time ...

They get small percentage from purchases done through the new Super Apps feature in the licensed phones.

ok, so a very small amount of money? Maybe, to avoid going into the same troubles than before, they need to think about and to set up a strategy ...

Jolla should open the store for paid (native) apps and take small cut from those sales.

Paid apps may bring few income, but at the same time they need operator to establish strict rules, processes, and this is where one need to hire extra staff. Seems to me that Jolla is kind of focusing on engineering rather then spending resources on marketing and business development. That might be fragile approach longterm, but considering the low volume of Jphones sold, they would not get much from a paid apps in the store either. /me thinks

I would assume they also receive some license fee from their contractors now. But I guess for break-even they need a few more than just Intex.

Can't remember where I read it, but on some interview they said 5-6 licensing partners would be enough.

No, they don't get any money from licensing, at least according to what they says in summer 2015.

Gentlemen, make up your mind! :) If they don't get money for licensing, then I don't see the point in developing SailfishOS. After all, that is Jolla's product?

Venty ( 2016-03-15 17:40:03 +0300 )edit

They get money from the ex-Partner Space, or at least that's their plan. Otherwise, Google would have no point in developing Android, since they don't get any money from licensing it.

Ok small smount from each telephone. Lets make a small calculation. If Jolla gets 10 EU from every sold unit. India is quite big country with more than 1 billion people. If say 10 million phones are sold and Jolla would get ,really dont know what is realistic, but say 10 EU/phone that makes 100MILLION EU. If they have a small success in India Jolla can grow.

do you really think they will sell 10 millions devices? I think 1 million should be already a very very good success.

I'm not sure they will take 10 euros. More, 2-3 euros ... (don't forget that Intex is also giving something to Jolla .. Indian market and a visibility in one of the biggest market, so why should they give money to Jolla ?)

Just wanted to point out that small money with modest volumes in a huge market can make a a lot of money that also can open up other markets.
