We have a great user guide:

http://jolla.com/guide/

but it's not always 100% accurate or complete.

So, if you see anything that needs fixing - please tell us here

Some guidelines:

  • We don't want to expand it a great deal - it's not supposed to be an exhaustive description of every aspect of the device
  • We do want to include particularly useful things and clarify any confusion
  • Changes in updates which got missed in the guide are useful
  • Focus is mainly on the content - we're fixing things like the missing "Go Top" button and device CSS

Thanks!

Should we post suggestions as separate answers so as to make it more clear that they refer to different sections / topics of the guide? This way also the comments and discussions would stay more organized.

@jjaone - Good point(s)!
E.g.: If someone's suggestion could be better formed by someone else, or if other persons disagree on a certain suggestion, etc..

I've converted my comment to an "Answer".

(This isn't as much a thing for the Jolla User Guide, as for the SailfishOS developer pages, but I'll link to it here for reference: "Suggestion: Change term "push" to "swipe" in developer environment.")

So, swipes they shall be, an not pushes.. I guess many will still speak about edge-swipes to make it sure they refer to gestures starting from the outside of the screen.

foss4ever ( 2014-01-16 19:33:31 +0300 )edit

"Edge-swipes" are at least / hopefully less confusing than "pushes", for those who have no idea what a "push" is. ;-) :-)

(Personally, I often look for a better word for "the gesture you make, to go forward or back" (e.g. "pull right, to go to the left", from "Pages … and the dots" under "Gestures - swipes, pulls, taps and flicks" in the User Guide ...
... and I just realised that I probably call that "swipe to the right" hm
and that "right, for left"/"left, for right" part is quite a lot like the rudder on a boat ;-/ )

swipe-from-left/right and pull-to-(direction) are the ones I'd understand the easiest - but maybe I'm just different.

Just a small thing... In the section "Lock, Home, Launcher and Events" the notification icon for missed emails is not mentioned.

Could be that anybody wants to know what this small envelope means or for which "missed things" notification icons on lock screen are existing. ;-) For example, it is good to know that there is no icon for unread tweets, but there is one for facebook notifications, etc.

My only guess is that the Email app doesn't come preinstalled, and therefore isn't mentioned in the User Guide.

There's no icon for unread Tweets, just as there's no icon for unread Facebook statuses,
but there is an icon for new Twitter Connect:s (if I remember correctly), i.e. Twitter's interaction, just as there is an icon for new Facebook notifications.
(Both Twitter and Facebook are (at least to some extent) integrated.)

phle ( 2014-01-11 00:37:17 +0300 )edit

Ah ok, didn't receive Twitter interaction yet. But I wonder that Facebook is listed and Twitter not. Maybe this list should be understood a more symbolic way. I assumed such a list of icons would be complete, so anybody who doesn't know the meaning of an icon on his lock screen can look it up.

If email app can add a notification icon to lock screen, is it also possible for any other app to add its own notifaction icon?

Just a quick thanks to say we appreciate people taking the time to make these answers/comments - we' have been keeping an eye on them :)

We'll get some of them integrated today and then published.

Also I hope you'll appreciate that we need to focus more on confusion, factual errors and omissions than on layout or editorial style; so comments about undocumented icons are a bit more likely to be incorporated than the suggestions on wording or use of treasure tips :)

What we are wondering about is how to 'tick' answers and comments that we've seen when we do a triage so that new comments are easier to spot. I may edit answers (maybe comments) and just put an [thanks - no more comments please] or something. It doesn't mean you can't comment or re-answer - it just means we're less likely to notice Lets see how that goes.

Not all Notification icons are explained. e.g. the notification "Application has been installed" hows up with a little suitcase icon on the lock screen, but that icon is not mentioned in the guide. Would be good to add to the section "http://jolla.com/guide/#sec-3"

Explain swipes for dummies.

Using my phone for the first time, I nearly got mad because it just didn't seem to work as in the tutorial. It took me quite a while to understand that I had to start the swipes outside the screen.

Obviously I simply didn't go through the tutorial carefully enough, but the same happened to many of my friends testing the phone. After understanding this crucial point, navigation instantaneously got intuitive and simple. So I suggest to make this point as clear and prominent as possible in the manual and in the tutorial.

After software support of 4G now you should update the user guide too. Until now 4G is only mentioned in the Hardware Spec section. You should add 4G and adjust the text in all places when mentioning 3G or 2G in other sections.

Newer software functions are not mentioned like

Settings -> System -> Sailfish OS updates in "Info" section.

Possibility to update the software is still mentioned in "About product".

Only volume up is mentioned to take a camera picture in "Get started" describing the volume key. But volume down works too.

Just write "Volume key can also be used to take pictures when you're using the Camera." like in "Camera - Taking photos".

The user guide should be more usable on mobiles especially on the Jolla Sailfish browser itself and provide a navigation menu or bar.
