There is thread on feature request which is just fighting about OTR vs OMEMO and they request that new thread would be opened.

I typed at Diaspora:

And #OTR shows it’s badness when you have #BitlBee, #Pidgin and #Conversations open. I have no idea which client received the messages. It could be worse if #SailfishOS Messaging also supported OTR.

#OMEMO again is unsupported by Pidgin and BitlBee and SailfishOS Messaging and the only client which somewhat supports it on desktop is #Gajim, but I seem to have problems with it freezing.

and I doubt I am the only one having this issue or that many people only use Sailfish OS for their messaging needs.

Status of OMEMO in Telepathy:

2016-04-23 14:55:22+0300 < Mikaela> Hi, what is the status with https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93090 ? I am asking, because it talks about moving to XMPP component, but the tracker says that it's in gabble component and I believe Sailfish OS Messaging OMEMO support depends on it.
2016-04-23 14:57:21+0300 < Mikaela> allso possibly a little offftopic according to the /topic, but does Empathy support XMPP bookmarks or is it even supported in Telepathy? I am currently using Pidgin on desktop which doesn't support them.
2016-04-23 15:29:39+0300 < 1Filtered_Just_In_Case1> Mikaela: gabble is the telepathy connection manager for XMPP
2016-04-23 15:30:28+0300 < 1Filtered_Just_In_Case1> Mikaela: Nobody has stepped up to implement this, yet
2016-04-23 15:31:07+0300 < 1Filtered_Just_In_Case1> Mikaela: Apart from that, there is no XEP for OMEMO is not
2016-04-23 15:31:56+0300 < 1Filtered_Just_In_Case1> There was some talk on the standards mailing list about that but the problem seems to be that there is no standard for OMEMO either but only the reference implementation
2016-04-23 15:34:49+0300 < Mikaela> thanks :)

Status with standardizing of OMEMO

Mikaela asked on Conversations XMPP conference and was replied that there is currently issue of being unusable with any not-GPL software or that is not in partnership Open Whisper Systems. Telepathy is LGPL so it cannot implement it. And it would be nice if someone at Jolla Fan Club who got the screenshots could translate this to more understandable version and include some of the technical details on that rebasing thing.

Definitely think this is superior to OTR with multi-client support.

Community wikized so wiser people can write better version of this request :)

ATM only Gajim (for desktop) and Conversations (for Android) have support for OMEMO. It would be awesome to see OMEMO support for SailfishOS too. It is the only way to secure, convenient and open source way to communicate.

I just can't wrap my head around people still clinging onto OTR, even pushing for more implementations of it when there is not a single aspect in which OMEMO is worse. Here's my vote.

It is discussed at LinuxActionShow actual: https://www.reddit.com/r/LinuxActionShow/comments/573ob2/omemo_xmpp_encription_the_real_watelegram/

if youre looking for an OMEMO compatible solution in the meantime, the android app 'Conversations' can be installed from F-Droid. it works really well, and integrates with android notifications patch. I'm also hoping for a native implementation but this is good for the time being. please support Conversations if you can, they are doing good things with a small team and it's fully open-source.

Isn't it possible to work together with the team of conversations? I think that it will be nice, that all the funktions from conversations can be used in the xmpp client/function from sailfish.

well, there is the Android app Conversations

tad ( 2016-10-28 00:35:21 +0300 )edit

well, Jolla is locking out unofficial ports so this is not an option.

Technics ( 2016-12-28 14:11:02 +0300 )edit

I'm not sure what you mean. Conversations is in the Jolla Store as Android app.

tad ( 2016-12-29 02:11:56 +0300 )edit

Only official devices can run those and i don't have one.

Unfortunately, no, nothing has happened.

Thanks. I was also searching for an answer to this. Encryption is a must so at its current form the SailfishOS messaging is useless for me.

It all depends on telepathy's (lack of) OMEMO support, right?

ladoga ( 2018-11-11 08:46:44 +0300 )edit

Yes, that's the bottleneck. When/if Telepathy gets proper support for OMEMO, it should only be a matter of making this visible in the UI, although I guess it would take Jolla another couple of years to add the necessary hooks. It would still be usable without a UI, though. It's a shame so few people are working on Telepathy. It's understandable given that Telepathy is very complex, but still.

However! I just thought of something: there was someone working on a standalone OMEMO compatible XMPP client for Sailfish, not using Telepathy. It's still in development, and there are also not many people with the knowledge or interest in helping out, but it's something, and will most likely be usable before Telepathy ever gets support for OMEMO. You can check out the project page over here: https://github.com/geobra/harbour-shmoose/commits/xep-0384
