Hi,

I tried to install the latest early update (2.0.1.11 I think), after I hit the "optimize" button the device rebooted and now I'm stuck with a blank screen and white LED after the jolla logo dissapeared. The device is not pingable in LAN either.

I can access recovery mode and the reason seems to be that /dev/mmcblk0p28 cannot be mounted in a writable manner. Here's what I've tried so far:

mount -t btrfs -o rw,recovery /dev/mmcblk0p28 /mnt
and
mount -t btrfs -o nospace_cache,clear_cache,enospc_debug,nodatacow /dev/mmcblk0p28 /mnt

/ # mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
none on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,relatime,size=412496k,nr_inodes=103124,mode=755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,relatime)
none on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,relatime,size=10240k)
/proc/sys/debug on /proc/sys/debug type debugfs (rw,relatime)
none on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noatime,size=256k,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,relatime,mode=600)
/dev/mmcblk0p28 on /mnt type btrfs (**ro**,relatime,ssd,noacl,space_cache)

If I do a "umount /mnt" afterwards, prompt gets stuck and nothing seems to happen. However, it does not when I use "-o remount,rw" instead, but it's still ro. It seems that everything comes down to this:

 Btrfs v3.16
Due to this, the factory reset script will break when it's trying to mount or umount and so is btrfs-mount-repair. To me, it seeme like as soon as balancing gets triggered, things go wrong. Any ideas how I could reset my device?

overdue update - tl;dr:

I didn't try anything new yet and finally got a new device (I started a new job and couldn't spend any more time on this).

I asked a few techies (not Jolla) about their opinion, but it turned out I already tried their recommendations like running btrfs repair or rebuilding uuids, so no new ideas. The last thing I might try is to dd the whole volume with an factory image if I can find one. One last thing which came to my mind is that maybe a balance might not have been run properly or not at all before the update, so that _may_ be one possible reason of why the volume is now still "full". Just because I can't really remember and it's nagging me since, but it's rather unlikely that the volume was actually "full" before that. I had some stuff running in /opt tho, but these things were stuffing all their data into nemo homefolder.

just to understand and have more precisions on your problem (because you don't tell some things about it). Before to trigger the update did you revert all patches, and uninstall the Phonehook from OpenRepos?

cemoi71 ( 2016-04-29 15:25:17 +0200 )edit

I have unapplied all applied patches in patchmanager but did not uninstall them from OpenRepos. I did not have Phonehook installed. The same procedure worked for me for previous updates.

maybe i tell stupid things. hope that this one is not more sensible on openrepos stuffs.
But for me, seem that you played a little bit with the chance.....
hope that you get it well again as a soon as possible. Sadly i can't help you.

Yeah, you can never know for sure. But to me, it seems like the update itself has never ran and the volume got somehow corrupted during the optimization process beforehead. But then again, no idea what exactly might happen there. Maybe I'm able to find a hint for the installed version in the ro volume.

@cemoi71 I very doubt that a full rootfs and emergency reboot on optimization has anything to do with openrepos

@0ida we had something like this before and I think you need to find a way to make it rw again somehow, as this is no btrfs forum, google might have more knowledge about how to unlock it - if successful, delete data before you do anything else or you will get it into limbo again

will someone from jolla comment on that issue? Several people reported same behavior while updating to 2.0.1.11!!!! o_O

UPDATE:

i've fixed my problem wit overwriting whole partition

Here is short instruction

  1. Get factory raw image of mmcblk0p28 partition
  2. Format micro SD card to ext4 or btrfs, extract raw image from archive and copy it yo card. Rename file to jolla.img
  3. Boot in recovery mode, enter shell
  4. Execute: mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /mnt dd if=/mnt/jolla.img of=/dev/mmcblk0p28
  5. Wait until image will be copied to partition, no output will be produced.
  6. Execute after copying complete: sync reboot
  7. Phone will be rebooted and should start working again
  8. In case if wifi networking won't work you need to reinstall kernel-adaptation-sbj using mobile network, or download this file and install locally: kernel-adaptation-sbj-3.4.91.20140612.1-10.22.1.jolla.armv7hl.rpm

There were a question here about this procedure and on maemo, but i can't find it right now

My phone after problem with btrfs bricked. I'am try repair, but rather reflash whole flash mem. In my opinion modem calibration was destroy. Phone not detect SIM card...Now my phone in table mode only...:( How switch to ext4 fs? May be from Big brother PC?

hyper_sonic ( 2016-05-18 08:26:39 +0200 )edit

This was also the last thing left to try which came to my mind, where did you get that image from?

0ida ( 2016-05-19 21:52:13 +0200 )edit

On third party resource. If you can cut root partition and flash only one then you have benefit such as virgi26. See answer above.

[sorry for my bad english]

The problem has been fixed along with jolla care assistance.

I guess that everyone bricked as their specific issues, but I give here the main line of what has been done to solve the problem:

1)

You can attempt to save your data on the phone by doing a dump onto an SD card. Doing a full dump is easiest but requires a 16Gb SD card or larger. To attempt this, in recovery mode, enter shell (option 4). Issue the commands

mkdir /mnt/sd

mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/sd

btrfs restore /dev/mmcblk0p28 /mnt/sd -ivso

The final command can take quite a while to complete as it creates a carbon copy of the entire contents of your device onto the SD card.

2)

Trying to save the filesystem itself: In recovery shell, issue the commands

mkdir /mnt/rootfs

btrfs-mount-repair /dev/mmcblk0p28 /mnt/rootfs

If this does not work, issue the commands

umount /mnt/rootfs

btrfs check --repair /dev/mmcblk0p28

3)

we now advise that you attempt a factory reset.

This worked for me. Once factory reset done, still have to process updates to the last sailfish version.

At this point (once everything is up to date) you can reinstall apps.

My btrfs is also in this bad shape. Currently only mounting with skip_balance seems to work.

Reparing also doesn't work:

btrfs check --repair /dev/mmcblk0p28

enabling repair mode Checking filesystem on /dev/mmcblk0p28 UUID: 54af0287-0fc0-42d2-8140-51e87d543c86 checking extents checking free space cache cache and super generation don't match, space cache will be invalidated checking fs roots btrfs: disk-io.c:701: btrfs_read_fs_root: Assertion `!(location->objectid == -8ULL || location->offset != (u64)-1)' failed. Aborted

Is there a manual way to do the factory reset steps? Or can I tell the factory reset script to mount with skip_balance?

Okay so I was able to mount rw with skip_balance, deleted some stuff, unmounted, mounted again, still errors when I try to balance. Then I tried scrubbing, and unrepairable errors were found. I then tried to run the btrfs-mount-repair script with skip_balance option so it would mount rw, and more errors came up. Now I get different output when I do btrfs check --repair, but it seems worse:

repair deleting extent record: key 46321664 168 4096 adding new tree backref on start 46321664 len 4096 parent 353 root 353 Backref 46321664 parent 353 root 353 not found in extent tree backpointer mismatch on [46321664 4096] owner ref check failed [46321664 4096] ref mismatch on [54804480 4096] extent item 0, found 1 bad key ordering 1 2 failed to repair damaged filesystem, aborting

Something seems to got really corrupted within the fs, I will update OP tomorrow with more infos after some more investigation.

@0ida hello, how is your situation now, is your problem solved?

cemoi71 ( 2016-05-10 12:16:59 +0200 )edit

Unfortunately not, I found a "workaround" for myself and have updated OP. Maybe I'll be able to get hold of a factory image, but I read it might be somewhat troublesome to get all the missing blobs and whatnot into place.

Same here. I've started the Optimisation process. The phone is now stuck after boot's logo. Black screen and white led.

May we have an official communication about that? This is not serious..

Same here after trying to update from Saimaa to 2.0.1.11 Taalojärvi. Device bricked, recovery mode first stalled then went unavailable, Jolla care on holiday until August 1st :-(
