(this thread is reviewed on a monthly basis)

Q: How can I suggest a new language?
A: Add an answer below, if you have checked it hasn't been requested yet.

Q: My language was added to the translation tool, great thanks! How can others and myself enjoy translating it the most?
A: The answer is here.

Q: My language hasn't been added yet :(
A: Ensure it has a coordinator assigned, and if not, nominate yourself. Then we'll add your language to the tool.

Q: What is a coordinator?
A: The answer is here.

Q: How can I test the translation on my device?
A: Ping @martonmiklos and ask to build an rpm for your language. If desired, the localisation packages will be published on OpenRepos. You could also manage the RPM build by yourself. Here you can find the scripts used for building the current packages.

Cheers!

yeeeeeeeees

XiveZ ( 2016-10-06 20:21:32 +0300 )edit

@XiveZ, your coordinator rights have been granted, you can now accept all your suggestions :)

sledges ( 2017-07-11 15:51:51 +0300 )edit

@sledges Please, make me a contributor too. I started the translation when it was not yet on sailfish.org. Now I have spare time for translations.

velemas ( 2017-11-28 17:26:24 +0300 )edit

@XiveZ would you like the help of @velemas as contributor? Sorry for late reply, our email notification system failed and this has fallen through the cracks.. At least I made a-date-sorted RSS feed reader for this, so hope not to miss no more :)

Marathi (India)

I want to translate Sailfish OS inMarathi language. I want to contribute to the translations and also know a few people who can help translating it in other Indic laguages as well. I see that translations for Indian languages are not made public. Please provide reasons for doing it. If you can make it public please do so.

Many thanks for your willingness! Indian language translations are managed by Intex, you can ping them (e.g. via twitter) telling that you can help via our service, and maybe they'll open push all those dialects quicker :) (it's a big company, so requests, even from us Jolla, take time; let's do it/ping Intex together!)

sledges ( 2016-08-24 00:57:59 +0300 )edit

I would also like to contribute to Marathi translation.

bhavin192 ( 2016-09-29 11:34:12 +0300 )edit

Now translations are public, but there is no one as a coordinator.

bhavin192 ( 2016-11-10 13:08:51 +0300 )edit

If there is no coordinator for the official language, we will simply accept suggestions as they are.

Would you like to volunteer? :)

Georgian

My native language is not listed. Georgian is my native language. Sailfish OS does not recognize my native language fonts, nor does it have keyboard for it. I have fonts for my language installed on my nexus 4 Sailfish os 2.0.1.11 and they are working well. Also i created keyboard files for Georgian and it works perfectly in Sailfish OS. here are pictures. There are no big and little letters in my language. Only few of them change with shift key. So here is it With shift pressed image description

Without shift image description

How can i contact jolla comunity or someone who can put this fonts and keyboard in this system. Of course i can make little program to do this but it would be better if OS supported my language natively. WP10, Ubuntu phone and Android do support it.

If you have a keyboard and you want to contribute contact Pekka Vuorella. See this thread https://together.jolla.com/question/124266/keyboard-contributions-for-inclusion-in-sfos/

For the fonts i have no idea.

ApB ( 2016-08-11 11:02:10 +0300 )edit

I contacted him. There are some issues. Fonts for my language do not have licence they are kinda free, nobody knows who made them. You can download them from sites. For example www.fonts.ge. I contacted administrator of that site and he told me this. But looks like they can't add Georgian keyboard to this system. I do not know what to do.

With a high chance of being wrong the font jolla uses is Droid which i think has a Georgian support.

ApB ( 2017-02-04 23:23:30 +0300 )edit

But when i installed SFOS until i had installed these fonts it could not show me many georgian sites text. After installing these fonts it displayed everything that was on georgian on that sites. I do not undartand much in fonds and unicodes but i can tell that if SFOS has georgian fonts it still needs this fonts to fully support my language.

Droid having georgian support and the georgian font being installed in the phone is two different things. If you find Droid Sans Georgian ttf and install it i suspect it will work.

Cantonese (Hong Kong)

In Hong Kong, Macau and many Chinese societies in Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, USA and Europe, Cantonese is one of the most spoken languages and is the mother-tongue of 120 million people around the world. In contrast to the written Chinese (Hong Kong) locale, Cantonese gives users great familiarity and extra friendliness, and hence would improve user engagement of the OS.

Cantonese system UI is rare in any other OSes. By offering Cantonese UI in Sailfish OS, we set ourselves #unlike to any others and would create great potential exposure in Cantonese-based media.

To kick-start the translation, we can base upon on the current Chinese (Hong Kong) and verbalise them. There's also a small but engaging Jolla user community in Hong Kong who can help with the translations --- just as how we helped with the development of the Dolphin Chinese input methods in Sailfish OS; and the Traditional Chinese community translation package for N900.

I would like to volunteer to get this working as an official language and keymap, while I think that the keymap will be the first thing to do so that it is usable on the screen and on the TOHKBD which I use, too.

ds1979 ( 2018-07-14 11:06:15 +0300 )edit

Hi @ds1979, thanks for stepping forward! However we can't proceed without a locale name, would you be able to further enlighten me what is the POSIX locale name for Serbian (Latin)? Esperanto

I would love to see Esperanto added. It's by far the most used constructed language of the world, and really easy to learn. Support for it's 6 special characters (ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, ŭ) on the keyboard would be great to have as well. The Linux distros on the PC already support it, and I'm really missing it's support on Sailfish.

Would anyone like to step up and be the coordinator? (is the main reason this language still hasn't been added :)

Keyboard requests go to Pekka: https://together.jolla.com/question/124266/keyboard-contributions-for-inclusion-in-sfos/?answer=128114#post-id-128114

I would be so happy if Esperanto gets added. I would love to help but i dont know anything about being a coordinator

Slovenian

I'm late to sign here, please add Slovenian (sl-SI).

Has 84% in transifex (would be more but not all strings are available). https://www.transifex.com/kenya888/unofficial-jolla-translations/language/sl_SI/

Slovenian keyboard also exists in OpenRepos, kindly provided by Penguin: https://openrepos.net/content/penguin/slovenian-keyboard

We also have translated some most common apps (Warehouse, SailGrande, WebPirate, MeeCast, mitakuulu2 ... to name a few).

As for coordinator -- if nobody else I volunteer :)

Thanks, b.

Luxembourgish

Although a small country, even Microsoft added the language :) Why not Jolla also to stand out. Keyboard to be used would be SF or SG like.
