Just a heads up / reminder: I received an email from my mobile service provider (Pure TalkUSA) informing me that AT&T will be making the switch to 3G (and up) in January 2017, and that their 2G service will be retired. That means my Jolla mobile device, which only has hardware compatable with 2G networks in the USA, will not have phone, text, or data functionality after that time (but WiFi will still work of course).

It appears I have about six months before my time with Jolla / Sailfish comes to an end. :(

I'd imagine you can switch to some other provider, which still offers 2G after at&t switces off their network...?

This is a dumb move. Many operators are retiring 3G and leaving 2G and 4G.

Quite unfortunate. But from travelling in the US I remember the audio quality of the 2G network was very bad. When I was in my hotel I would use the hotel landline (first time in 20 years or so) because conversation was close to impossible. That was in a mid-size town in MA not far from Boston.

But I agree I would like a universal phone to use with SailfishOS.

I used my Jolla in USA for around 1,5 years and never had an issue with 2G -voice or data- (I was in New England as well). It was slow as hell but it worked. I had T-Mobile by the way, and I didn't heard that they will shut down 2G, so you can switch to T-Mobile at least!

But I agree, a universal phone, with a 4" screen would be perfect....I mean, for me :)

I was in San Francisco in September 2017, and was able to make a call. I didn't check which *G I used. But here in Finland it is always 3 or 4G. At least the label in the status bar.

I was in the Chicago area recently (November 2017) and got good 2G coverage with T-Mobile there. Good enough for voice and basic data communication using my Jolla 1. Much better than AT&T 2G in the Boston area a few years ago. Nice surprise, I thought I would need to use Wifi voice calling.

I was in USA this April with my Jolla 1. While my Russian SIM-card was installed there were no calls, to text, no data. With T-Mobile SIM-card only calls and texting were available.

This is not completely accurate. I am also in the US and have AT&T and yes 2G will be discontinued but there is 3G support in the AT&T spectrum and it is the common band in major urban areas in the US. You may lose connection between cities.

Note in Boston at least 3G works.

I have an Intex Aquafish and in the US T-Mobile only supports 2G as far as i can tell on the Indian Version phone.

i dont know what 3g/4g bands are used in the US. But i recently visited Japan where they only have 3g and up. and jolla.worked fine there.

Really? Does it support phone calls via 3G? Because VoLTE ist not supported at the moment although it has been requested a thousand times.

3g (UMTS) has regular old-style voice. All phones with 3g supports voice on it.

Swisscom announced in October 2015, that they will shut down 2G in 2020. See the Press Release here. The Jolla Phone however does work very well on their 3G and 4G network.

Providers here in Germany are also thinking about retiring 2G. But there are so many 2G devices that business customers rely on, mostly embedded stuff. Things like energy meters, site monitoring/alarm equipment, etc. 3G on embedded systems like these has never really taken off but there are still tons of new devices with just 3G/2G being sold, so retiring 3G in favor of 4G is no cnsiderable option as well. So there has to be at least some provider that leaves their 2G on air. I can't really imagine the US situation is any different.

In Norway Telenor are going to shut down 3G in 2020 and 2G in 2025.

Totally opposite the FM radio they are going to shut down in 2017...

(if you heard radio over internet it counted towards DAB)
