Settings not being remembered

So my phone has a lot of issues right now, and I tried to solve one of these using this procedure. Problem is, when entering a password for devel-su, I was met with an auth failure.
I checked the password in the settings, and it was not set (I'm sure I set it in the past). So I set a new one, but keep getting auth failure. After trying multiple times, I saw that when I set a password, closing settings, and open it again, the "Allow signing in via SSH" is deactivated and my password is not there anymore. How can I fix that? (Rebooting didn't help, nor any of the options in the Utilities section of the settings).
