"Goodbye" when shutting down the phone: seriously? [answered]

Dear Jolla, thank you very much for making me feel that my phone is talking to me when I attempt to reboot or shut it down. I guess if I wanted a OS faking to be a (silly) person, I would have had installed Windows. I usually do not talk to my phone, neither wave at it when it is shutting down. So I find a bit displaced, and in contrast with what Sailfish OS is, the "Goodbye" message appearing when the phone shuts down. The black screen that used to be there before was more sober.

At least, could you change this message, that does not carry any information, with something more useful? For instance:

"Shutting down..." "Rebooting..." "Restarting home screen..."

Thank you!

IMHO I think that this is a improvement. The Goodbye message is much better than a black screen without any indication of what is going on. It have been a help for me.

Would be nice to have a custom text as option. So I can change it however I want, for me that's not a need to change the text in an official system update. Let the people choose themselves what they want to read there. If some need a message like "Shutting down on your command, master" so it be - others may prefer the silent mode without any text. -> Make it available in the settings

IMHO there are many most important problems ;)

The way you present this problem is highly exaggerated. I don't think it ever was the intention to resemble a person.

Close your eyes or watch other direction if this is such a big deal for you. As @plemil noted, this is improvement over the previous where the same Jolla-logo was shown on boot and shutdown and now you can tell which direction the OS is going before the red led turns on.

My opinion is that is an interesting theme for developers.
But in other way, it is not really relevant i think for casual users .
That would be fine that Jolla make currently no adjustment regarding this request, at the time which other thing have a stronger priority.
Thus, that's great that the point is successfully found.
I learn a little thing with it too.
But now is closed.
It's ok?

Thanks Markkyboy!!! That's indeed the file in which the shutdown message is encoded:

/usr/lib/qt5/qml/Sailfish/Lipstick/ShutDownItem.qml

The string seems to be hardcoded in a binary component "sailfish-components-lipstick-la-goodbye-user", which gets translated then. But you can override everything with "text". Since, at least 12 people like the phone talking to them, I suggest they use this "Label":

Label {

    id: shutDownMessage
    anchors.centerIn: parent
    width: parent.width - 2 * Theme.horizontalPageMargin
    // Non themable color since we always want it white over black
    color: "white"
    font.pixelSize: Theme.fontSizeExtraLarge
    horizontalAlignment: Text.AlignHCenter
    wrapMode: Text.WordWrap
    text: "Again trying to make XMPP working?"
}

Or this one:

Label {

    id: shutDownMessage
    anchors.centerIn: parent
    width: parent.width - 2 * Theme.horizontalPageMargin
    // Non themable color since we always want it white over black
    color: "white"
    font.pixelSize: Theme.fontSizeExtraLarge
    horizontalAlignment: Text.AlignHCenter
    wrapMode: Text.WordWrap
    text: "See you Dear, but please don't leave me alone in the dark too long! Your Loving Jolla Phone."
}

That of course depends on your intimate relationship with your phone guys :))

PS: I answered my own troll with:

text: "Shutting down..."

Haaa, nice one :) It can be done with patch and setting in Settings app...
P.S. @eatdirt, did you tried to reboot your phone and see your text ?

Nicely done there @eatdirt, thanks for hint/code, I shall be tinkering later albeit with lost of care, it's too much of a PITA to reset and restore the device. Who knows what I did wrong the first time round, but it was enough to make me stay away from that file!

Yes, I tried, and it worked fine. I have just slightly reedited the above (I did not test the shutDownItem.userName).
