LTE with Jolla C [released]

asked 2016-06-29 11:08:53 +0300

updated 2016-09-22 10:44:34 +0300

Edit 21.09.2016 Re-opened this question, because of the following observations:

1. No 4G @ home anymore

While LTE worked quite well after the 2.0.2.51 update, a few days after the update I came across a bug (?), which prevents the Jolla C to connect to LTE (800MHz) at home. The first time this happened, my Jolla C showed 4G and some hours later it showed 2G without doing anything.

Nothing worked to get a 4G connection again: Reboot the device, boot without SIM inserted and boot again with SIM inserted, switch from SIM slot 1 to 2 and back, setting network mode from 'Prefer 4G' to any other option and back, disable mobile data connection, restart network connections via Utilities ...

The only thing that worked was to leave the cell (drive to another region). After I came home again, 4G worked correctly.

After that 4G worked well a few days/weeks, but since a week or two, my Jolla C completely refuses to connect 4G again. I tried everything again, but nothing helps.

My GFs Jolla C with the same OS version works just fine with 4G with the same provider. In other regions where 4G didn't work correctly (i.e. at work) before the update, my Jolla C still connects to 4G.

Update 22.09.2016: After fiddling around with the more network modes patch from @coderus (installing, uninstalling, reinstalling ofono package), my Jolla C connected via 4G again @ home yesterday. Let's see how it behaves the next days/weeks...

2. Slow switching from 2G/3G over to 4G / refusing to switch over after reboot

Jolla C is connected via 4G with good reception. After rebooting the phone, Jolla C refuses to connect via 4G and just stays at 2G or 3G. After some time (and maybe cell switching), it connects via 4G.

3. General

For testing, I installed the more network modes patch from @coderus. As soon as I select the option "4G" (only), the network switches it's state from "Telekom.de" to "Searching..." and never ever switches back. When I select "4G+3G", the network switches to "Telekom.de" directly without problems, but connects only via 3G.

I need to mention, that I have a very good 4G reception in my work place and at home, so I can clearly say that a "4G dead zone" can not be the problem.

I know the 4G band @ home is 20 (800MHz) and I think @ work it is band 20, too - but I can not clearly say that.

Original question:

Hello,

as we came back to Germany from our vacation from Helsinki, I noticed that the Jolla C does not want to connect via LTE in our region. Jolla Phone (Jolla 1) has no problems to connect via LTE here.

I checked the specs and compared them to the Jolla 1 and it seems, that the Jolla C should support all the LTE bands the Jolla 1 supports plus band 1.

Unfortunately I don't know the LTE band used in our region, but I think it is band 20 (800MHz) as we live in a small village.

Is the spec sheet of Jolla C wrong, or is it a bug in Sailfish OS?

Edit 19.07.2016:

Intex itself specifies the LTE bands 2300, 1800 and 850 on their site: http://www.intex.in/mobile/smartphone/aqua-fish/specifications.html

So it seems that your spec sheet is wrong. If this is true it would be a real PITA because 90% of time I only have the 800MHz band and almost never 3G.

Hi ho, which provider do you use? Did you try one of the others too? AFAIK because of O2 buying E-Plus, there is a lot of fluctuation in frequency use going on at least for this provider.

I am/we are using Telekom.de - so this should be no problem :)

I can confirm this. T-Mobile around Munich/Augsburg works fine for me, but T-Mobile in Passau-Auerbach does not work. The Jolla C sees no LTE there.

Hmm, this will be interesting. I live in Zuerich/Switzerland but am often in Germany, being it for holidays or just a hop over the border for shopping. However, I will only receive my Jolla C in August, when I'm back from an extended trip around Scandinavia.

I also have the same problem with 800Mhz in Sweden, provider Tele2. Would be happy if someone could clarify if the specifications of Jolla C is correct or if it is related to software or some certifications with the providers. My Jolla 1 has no problems with the same SIM.

I cannot confirm. Using 2 sim cards, T-mobile and KPN in The Netherlands. Both 4G connection work. Switching is effortless. So, I'm happy with my JollaC.

meneer ( 2016-07-19 09:47:40 +0300 )edit

@meneer: Yeah, LTE works generally, but not the 800MHz band. Or can you confirm that you are connected via this band?

@ejjoman: Your edit would explain why it doesn't work for me: In France, we only have 700, 800, 1800 and 2600 and the 1800 is only used by some operators ( mine not being one of them :( )

Same problem here with O2 Germany

I can cornfirm the same problem too with Vodafone in the Netherlands!

HtheB ( 2016-07-20 15:28:24 +0300 )edit

LTE working in NCR - Delhi, India bands 3 & 40.

dillihifi ( 2016-07-21 10:49:59 +0300 )edit

@dillihifi: But you are rocking an Intex Aqua Fish right? It is supposed to support Indian bands and the Jolla C European bands.

speactra ( 2016-07-21 11:34:15 +0300 )edit

Same problem with Telekom in Germany, very disappointing for me. No 4G available, Jolla 1 never had problems with same sim card.

MaxT ( 2016-07-22 23:42:21 +0300 )edit

Same problem i Norway with provider Netcom. If i first connect to mobiledata with 2G/3G and then switch til.4G/LTE, Then I have no problem.

Pam ( 2016-07-27 17:49:18 +0300 )edit

Im getting 4G with Telering in Vienna. But only at certain places. Telering is T-Mobile Austria.

LTE Bands are 800/1800 and 2600. How can i check which band is in use?

@emschi: Here is how I do it (not the best way perhaps?):

cat /dev/smd7&
echo -e 'AT$QCRSRQ?\r' > /dev/smd7

(repeat the second command only to read again) It replies with something like:

$QCRSRQ: 045,6300,"-67",325,6300,"-97",460,6300,"-98"

6300 here is the EARFCN (EUTRA Absolute radio-frequency channel number), 6300 is a frequency in the 800 band (printout from my J1). Look up ERFCNs here: http://niviuk.free.fr/lte_band.php

Root probably needed on JC, but not J1

attah ( 2016-07-29 16:02:29 +0300 )edit

I have updated both Jolla 1 and Jolla C to the latest = 2.0.2.48 (Aurajoki). Jolla 1 has no problems connecting to UK O2 4G on 800mHz but Jolla C only connects at 3G on 800mHz. This problem is repeatable on different masts and with different SIMs so it would appear that currently Jolla C does not support 4G/LTE on Band 20 (800mHz) and this may be a hardware deficit.

Are able to connect to a mobile network that provides LTE (4G) over the frequency of 800MHz(band 20)

It does appear the other bands are working OK:

richardski ( 2016-07-28 10:43:44 +0300 )edit

mine operator can support 3 bands, so I dont know, 800,1200,2600

I have DNA as operator here in Finland and my Jolla C is stuck with 3G

I have Sonera 4G and it works perfectly with both Jolla 1 and Jolla C. :) :)

N9Sailfish ( 2016-08-31 14:59:16 +0300 )edit

I hope with the LTE-fix (Aurajoki 2.0.2.51) also TeleFinland will work! I'm currently not in Finland but could you perhaps test it? BTW, I was the opinion that TeleFinland belongs to Sonera, so it's strange that they use a different LTE-channel than their parent comparny.

Marti Masa K ( 2016-09-01 11:31:33 +0300 )edit

I have (in Finland) Sonera as a business SIM at it has worked just fine all the time but my private SIM which is Saunalahti (Elisa) keeps disconnecting/connecting few minutes periods and it's quite frustrating. I have tried changing card slots which didn't make any difference. In Jolla 1 also my private SIM card is working and in both phones I have 2.0.2.51. So for me this update didn't change anything.

Hi all, I just wanted to report that with LTE-fix (Aurajoki 2.0.2.51) from yesterday (31th of September) my Jolla C works perfectly now in Vodaphone-Germany network(s). It did not work before and I'm quite satisfied, although it's working perhaps just in the 2nd SIM-slot :-)

After upgrading to 2.0.2.51, I can now confirm that Band 20 LTE (800Mhz) from O2 in the UK is now working on 4G in SIM 1 position. Not had time to try it in SIM 2 position.

richardski ( 2016-09-02 18:03:45 +0300 )edit

I can confirm that after update to 2.0.2.51 JollaC connects to LTE Band 800MHz from T-Mobile in Germany. SIM 1 is used and SIM 2 disabled.

after updating to 2.0.2.51, 4G works perfectly but when I am in 4G network mode, I can't receive or pass a phone call but in another network mode I can

I install the patch «more network modes» by coderus_ofono and that fixed my issue in "Any" mode or in "4G+3G" mode but not in "4G only" mode.

Because there is no VoLTE support in Jolla C, and LTE lacks traditional voice call support, 4G only mode will leave you without data. This is "per specification", not anyone's fault.
