Hello,

is it planned to have a "Jolla PC Suite" like we used to have with the N9 to be able to sync/update/backup the information on the phone?

I know there is a way using Linux but I'd like to know if there is something planned for Windows.

greetings!

I am using a WinXP PC. I cannot use the USB to connect my Jolla and WINXP PC since no driver. I hope Jolla can provide a tool like as PC suite can use in WINXP PC and provide the usb driver for WINXP.

Not sure it makes sense for Jolla to support XP if even Microsoft isn't supporting it any more.

No need to put another integrated, flaky smartphone-suite on my desktop. No need for yet another Mediaplayer / mp3 ecosystem. I would agree on a simple GUI for Backup/Restore for those not wanting to sling to the command line. But no suite of redundant media-apps.

Sync Contacts, Calendar, Backup, Restore and Sailfish Upgrades would be enough.

@Hiro: as was told to you things work on winXP, just not as easily and nice as on newer windows. https://together.jolla.com/question/2766/how-to-connect-to-my-pc-windows-xp/ I even posted the driver + install instructions for developer mode there.

Maybe the community could start working on a Qt based (so it works on win/mac/*nix) "Jolla PC suite", which allows people not familiar with SSH and other tools to access their phone functions? If the community starts it, Jolla would see it has real demand and could take actively part in it. First step would be listing what users would expect from such a "suite".

EDIT: an idea from @ApB: Instead of a suite software on a PC, use a web server on jolla and make a "web suite" for backups etc.

I would be happy if the app had following features:

  • Sync/Backup/Restore Contacts
  • Sync Calendar
  • Backup/Restore of the phone settings

i'd rather have owncloud support for these functions. All my data centrally in my private cloud. Of cource proper USB mass storage support is mostly welcomed. This is now crippeled on android by only having MTP.

I am no fan of having to install software on my desktop for things like moving files or any other phone related tasks. I'd prefer if i could -have no idea if technically feasible- just type something like "username@jolla_phone_name" on the browser -assuming they are both connected to the same network- and securely connecting to it and doing all the tasks i need to.

hmm, this approach could be taken, but would need a webserver running on the jolla. This is no problem, and one could turn it on and off from settings I guess

This is the preferred approach. This way, the development isn't on what platforms are supported, but making sure that the mobile is secure, then browser-chrome is supported. There's also a question like this.

How about rsync?

Well, I meant something "Jolla native".

In what way is rsync not "jolla native"?

Julf ( 2014-01-12 14:32:48 +0300 )edit

Well, if I buy a Nokia I get the Nokia Suite, if I buy an iPhone I get iTunes etc.

I meant something like that.

OK, so what you want is something with a snizzy user interface that is labelled "jolla". Fair enough. I was just addressing the actual functionality.

That's the point. I have no problem using rsync at home. But in my work computer I am very limited on what I can install and what not. Surely a "Jolla suite" would be easier.

I would be happy if my jolla acount would sync my contacts, settings, apps and browser favs. just in the cloud. A intigrated dropbox sync for all the rest will do. Right now I use ssh, which is easy

This is exactly the worst thing I imagine. It's of course your decision to hand your contact lists and other personal data to untrusted parties like Google, DB and the like. However I expect the majority will certainly not want to go that way. In particular not by default and promoted by Jolla.

no.. not google.. Jolla. we all have an account with jolla. being able to sync to a jolla cloud would be fine by me.. had a nokia account for ages and that one was useful more than once

teun ( 2014-01-31 01:10:54 +0300 )edit

No also to 'integrated DB' as an sync/backup solution.. We are all aware of how content in DB is scanned, documents automatically read, and finally 'wire-tapped' to make sure nothing is private / secure when using that service. What we need is a way to sync/backup directly from phone (lets say the settings menu) to a target / service (local/hybrid/cloud) that we can choose and trust.

foss4ever ( 2014-02-06 22:44:34 +0300 )edit

The backup could be encrypted (with a key that never leaves the phone) before sending it to the big evil G.

I personally think it makes a lot of sense for Jolla to attack this problem in this order:

Step 1 - Finish support of CalDAV (calendar), CardDAV (contacts) and native client for files (this could go as far as gallery).

Step 2 - Once protocols are in place, users have the freedom. There are many services available that support these protocols. If privacy is top priority for you, you could e.g. host an Owncloud instance. Anything is possible.

(This idea could be stretched even to the form of a local server that would run as part of this PC-Suite, but personally I think that it's sooo 00's ;))

Please tell me this is third party and we wont have to install anything in our computers to handle the phone. Pretty please. :/

How can you easily sync with Mavericks?

BlackBerry Link can do it.

The Missing Sync cannot do it anymore for Mavericks and up

Forget Mavericks....Yosemite is now providing enough headaches

bmwebb ( 2014-11-23 03:47:09 +0300 )edit

Precisely, that's why I stick with Mavericks.

And I only upgraded from Mountain Lion when local sync was put back into Mavericks.

Because of that, I don't understand why The Missing Sync still does not support it.
