Maybe they can add whatsapp to the message app? I believe the whatsapp api is out there.

i will be making my own suggestion for this but perhaps have the option for custom accounts within sailfish so that hackers, or even Jolla (if they are allowed to) can integrate this within messages just like facebook messenger is at the moment. perhaps the same with bbm imessenger and what-not..?

Obviously, as the Alien Dalvik virtual machine isn't running any background services if its closed. You also need to have WhatsApp "under" some other android app to have notifications sent into Sailfish, as otherwise WhatsApp will think it's an active app wether Alien is minimized or not.

well, it looks like it is running background stuff, since I get notifications from Hangouts even when I'm not using it at all (and it is closed and no process shows up). Maybe some kind of crontabs ?

Use "Zedge" or a similar app to add a notification sounds for Android apps. You will at least hear something

Sure, if minimized you can hear a new whatsapp message received sound and see a notification similar to new unreaded email, but you have to keep whatsapp open ( start whatsapp and swipe from left to right to keep opened and running ) SAILFISH MULTITASKING POWER

Whatsapp is open. And "minimized". Also tried that whatsapp is "under" other Android app.

There is no sound when message is received. Notification is shown, but no sound. In Whatsapp settings sounds are set.

Same behavior with Skype.

SailfishOS 2 / AlienDalvik / Lipstick uses a whitelist (/usr/share/lipstick/androidnotificationpriorities) for notifications from Android apps.

See this answer for how to add K9-Mail, Conversations, Threema, TextSecure and other apps to it: https://together.jolla.com/question/109180/feature-request-add-missing-apps-to-the-chat-application-list/?sort=votes
