In Jolla C (JP-1601) running SFOS 2.0.2.48 there is a new setting "Settings > Location > Offline position lock from mobile phone tower information" that doesn't appear in original Jolla Phone (JP-1301) with the same (or higher) OS version.
What JP-1301 seems to be missing, is a package called geoclue-provider-mlsdb (Geoinformation Service from Mozilla Location Services Database Provider). My JP-1601 also had a related package geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-fi (cell id to location data (.fi)) installed and there are two more (geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-au, geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-in) available.
These packages can't be installed on JP-1301, as they aren't found on repos. I don't know why.
I did download the packages using my JP-1601 (pkcon download . geoclue-provider-mlsdb
, pkcon download . geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-fi
), copied them to JP-1301 and installed using pkcon install-local geoclue-provider-mlsdb*
(install-local needs the full name of the file. I replaced the rest of the filename with wildcard * so I got the both packages installed with one command).
After installing the packages, the new option under "Settings > Location" appeared. I think it's working, because I seem to get the GPS fix a bit faster (and more accurate) than previously. I'm not, however, sure about this and don't know how to test it. I also tried it without the geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-fi package and didn't notice any difference.
I uploaded the packages (both licensed LGPLv2.1) to Dropbox: geoclue-provider-mlsdb, geoclue-provider-mlsdb-data-fi.
I was wondering the same on the tablet. I have no associated settings I can find. But if I now open GPS Info and "Maps" I get 0/0 satellites in the former and a point that is in the right block of houses in the latter. Either the tablet cached my locations or Wifi lookup is working. Can't tell which, but I'm guessing it's wifi lookup.:) What happens if you try the same on the Jolla 1?
