August is a lazy month so lets make a poll of some sort.

You get to have one native app that you will pay 10 euros (or the equivalent in your local currency) for. What is it.

Rules:

One answer per person and only one app.

Must be something not having to do with the core os.

Separate answers so others can upvote/downvote.

For those willing to chip in for app development, a place like Bountysource could be suitable to show that interest: How to post a Bounty

Interesting poll. Looking to the (far) future it may even be that native apps (on Android, iOS and Windows) will lose importance and be replaced by so called "progressive web apps": Native Apps are Doomed

Progressive web apps will strengthen Sailfish OS as more and more companies will start to provide browser-based applications instead of native. This may sound like utopia to you now, but the process has already started. So it seems that an awesome (native!) browser will be the most important app for the future of Sailfish OS. The linked article is a good starting point to create your first progressive web app (don't forget to test it on Sailfish OS!). Or try out some progressive web apps now: https://pwa.rocks/

I think this should be a Wiki post.

This is other thing than paying. Jolla should give an alternative method (i.e connmanctl) to be used e.g. with Situations app in addition to totally block connmanctl in e.g. Situations for wifi, bt and flight mode. Thus we as users could choose with our own risks. Let me say, this should be worth 10 euros or a pint of beer.

Tidings. There's no native 3rd party app I use more often. (And I remember how much I missed a native RSS reader when there was none.)

The point was to ask for an app that doesn't exist or everything available doesn't cut it. But ok. Its your money. :P

@ApB Oh. I wouldn't have read that from your question (and still don't). Sorry.

ossi1967 ( 2016-08-24 11:02:08 +0300 )edit

@ossi1967

Yeah i know. I wasn't clear enough and i assumed people will ask for things we don't have.

ApB ( 2016-08-24 11:49:02 +0300 )edit

ApB Did you invite us to ask for apps? It was more like an invitation to reward developers for their work.

ossi1967 ( 2016-08-24 12:58:01 +0300 )edit

The idea was to ask for an app that you need so much that you would gladly pay a big price to have. Should have worded the question better. :/

@ApB not only OTA, through usb too. In my firm that not really great with wifi, because smartphone could only go to the visitor wifi, and for acces on it with my pc, there is no access possible. Alternative is only usb, and it works very well.

Maps.me for Sailfish OS could be an alternative too. (Also based on OpenStreetMaps).

vattuvarg ( 2016-08-24 01:22:35 +0300 )edit

Yes, as far as I'm concerned, Maps.me is far superior to OSMand thanks to its much less complicated interface.

Wouldn't mind other channels apps and DNA TV app being ported to native versions too.

There is now a native (3rd party) app called Näyttämö by @joonne! Haven't tested it yet, though.

A simple video editor.

Nothing fancy, just something to cut and perhaps splice videos taken by the phone's own camera.

Edit: I would pay at least €30, not just 10.

Nokia's N95 had such NLE editor. I had great fun with it creating a holiday-movie while on holiday. Short clips, pictures, music, titles and some simple transitions, really nice. The rest of the family was unaware :) Finished it on the way back, so when we got home, I connected the N95 to a TV (tv out!) and got a great end of the holiday. So yeah, would pay :)

MLT might be of use here.

Well, it looks that the native offline maps navigation software is missing (see top voted wishes at this stage). Would be great to get some open source app for that. That is an indicator for devs as well, so its good to suggest solutions as well, not just that you would pay for an app.

@vattuvarg: I never used maps.me and don't know much about it. It seems to be Qt app, or at least Qt in some part. Do you know whether its written in Qt or Qt/QML? Porting would be easier from QML, I think.

There is also development in Ubuntu Touch navigation software. Never used it myself, but uNav is supposed to support offline navigation as well.

Helm

Native navigation for professional transports

  • Offline route planning and navigation adapts to limitations in length, height and weight of the vehicle.

  • Realtime weather forecasts for the route are available during planning and navigation.

  • The software keeps track of driver rules for sleep, breaks and more, even during route planning.

  • Audio notifications can be transferred to a bluetooth headset.

  • Multiple routes can be planned in advance and recalled from memory.

Companions
There are additional apps that improve vehicle safety and driver comfort. These companions are not part of the Helm navigation software, but the multitasking capabilities of Sailfish OS allows these companions to run simultaneously with the Helm navigation.

  • Messages about traffic is supplied by the media player (from FM radio).

  • DashCam functionality (with GPS location) is supplied by the camera app.

  • Inclinometry apps are available for downloading.

Hey! I've been dreaming about this for a looong time, OK? ...and it would cost more than 10 € for any other OS. (Possibly around 100 €)...

vattuvarg ( 2016-08-24 01:04:12 +0300 )edit

I would be satisfied with a native navigation like Sygic now (offline plannings, traffic information, automated rerouting caused current traffic, ...) I also would expect much more than 10 € .

A native WhatsApp-client with its own address book (and no access to the systemwide address book) - pretty much what Mitakuuluu was.

why not system-wide addressbook? That sounds dead handy

tetris11 ( 2016-08-24 23:44:18 +0300 )edit

Because I have absolutely no intention of giving WhatsApp/Facebook access to all my contacts and their data. Names and (mobile) numbers of those that are already registered at WhatsApp - ok. Anything else - no way. That's the reason why I stopped using WhatsApp on my Jolla after Mitakuuluu stopped working. Until the day that isolating my contacts data from WhatsApp is possible, I'll use WhatsApp only with Pidgin on my desktops (until they block that one, of course - long live closed source software with proprietary protocols - not).

so long as FB/WhatsApp keep banning users and threatening developers with legal action this isnt going to happen...

r0kk3rz ( 2016-08-25 23:15:55 +0300 )edit

@dyraig Quite a bit late! ;)
But I feel exactly the same way and an using WA together with OpenContacts from F-droid.
Not perfect, but okay. Using OpenContacts to find people in its own address book and switch to WA. Using WA directly you need to know the number or profile picture.

Spoken from an end-user perspective: Calendar App - Local Calendar App that allows synchronising with local Outlook Calendar as well as adding calendars. - All without using cloud-services like google. - I´d probably even pay more than 10 EUR for that.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

The current calendar app syncs just fine with CalDAV and SyncML. No googles needed.

MMh... Thx, Fuzzillogic. - Do you by chance know where I can find kind of an instruction on how to sync a local Outlook Calendar with the / a Calendar on my Jolla? - Any help would be much appreciated. Many thx so far.
