Faster way to change between keyboard layouts

As the title suggests. Changing between keyboard layouts is kind of slow in the current implementation (tap>hold>change).

A slide on the space "button" (like android) is faster but i believe it will be problematic in landscape. So it needs something more clever than that. :/

personally i find right complicated with the current possibility that we should swipe after holding on the space button. It doesn't work most of the time, and should repeat always the action 2x 3x or 5x.
Why not hold and then tap on the wished one?
@ApB could you bring a picture of what you think with the android solution? even if that some people knows more or less what you think, there is possible confusion with other self representations....
With a picture, we know exactly what it is meant. Many thx in advance

I agree with op that the current way is not simple (I use 3 keyboards on regular basis). I also agree with @cemoi71 that the forced swipe is convoluted and hard to get right. Many times I have to try it multiple times before the change is accepted. I miss the way normal context menues work, that if you just lift your finger after the menu is out you can tap the item you want.

@ApB: What do you mean with "a slide on the space button"? I'm regularly using 3 different keyboards and think it's fast and easy to switch them on Sailfish OS compared to Android. The way you could switch keyboard on N9 was interesting, but didn't always work well, especially when using more than 2 keyboards.

Slide your finger on the space button. The N9 way seems like a nice and fast way which doesn't require much precision.

i forgot to tell that have 3 keyboards too, and the swiped choice get me nervous.
That said, i repeat me by telling that for me it would be better hold and tap on the right one.

but i'm open to other suggestions.

That's bring me to an other idea (a complete other one), it would be cool for me that contacts get an other extra field for language, so that the keyboard change automatically to the right language if we want right to the contact...

Just like Cemoi71, I have 3 Keyboards. But the language field in the contact wouldn't pass in my case.

Indeed, for normal sms/mail, it will works, but I'm not sure it will with whatsapp/telegram. I think a similar layout than Swiftkey will be a good deal. We can set up one layout (AZERTY/QWWERTY/QWERTZ) and the three languages of this disposition. It means We'll be able to write in the others languages without any switches, button to press&hold. Just typping. The dictionnary knows which language we are using and only charge predictions/corrections int this language until an another language

@superloutre you means with all android app, right?
yes it could be quite difficult.
That's why i suggest the tap/hold/tap could be efficient for all, and the extra plus for sfos app could be with the extra language field in contact.
But something should be implemented in the app too that the action should be done.
But i still don't understood what you told with the swiftkey layout.
Would it be possible that you provide a picture which represent what you suggest?

Sorry, my english is not that good. I suppose it happens when you don't practice enough.

My problem with tap/hold/tap is quite simple. I just often forget that I have to switch. Since years , swiftkey and some google keyboards (official or forks) leave us the possibility to type in many languages without tap/holp.

https://support.swiftkey.com/hc/en-us/articles/204516312-Setting-Up-SwiftKey [GOTO =>2: Languages]

It explain that you can choose your languages (up to three) And then choose the layout (or not). In your case , you're french (like me), you are using a AZERTY keyboard. If you want to write in english, you have to switch the language (and layout) to use the dictionnary. I find this unpratical af, and a waste of time. With this, you'll be able to write in frenchm german and english without switching . Just typing and the dictionnary will recognize which language you're using

i don't think that it is a problem of language by you or by me... but just a problem of representation of the description of the function...
I understand you very well, but it's not that easy to represent myself what you've told about the function.
Picture and video are very good to help materials for the understanding.

Anyway, do you mean that the keyboard has a layout at the beginning of the usage.
Then when you type it will change its layout to the good one?
I can't represent myself that it works like this... that's quite fuzzy if the layout change by typing (could be a good game)
Maybe the keyboard has stored the layout which was used at last with this app, and with the one contact id that the app shared with the keyboard. (the keyboard app ask for contact access by its installation)...

cemoi71 ( 2016-10-11 12:03:25 +0300 )edit

That's the deal, you can configure it without changing layout For example, you can type yith a french AZERTY layout in french/german/english

superloutre ( 2016-10-11 12:17:22 +0300 )edit

than shortly said, is rather a kind of self learning function by storing the last keyboard id with the contact for the app / each app.... right?
