It would be nice to see a native facebook application which will operate as the default client for the Jolla device. Clicking links from notifications should direct to the native facebook application rather than the browser.

Edit:

Jolla's answer: Link

Counting in the other thread this feature-request has already about 300 votes and should be high priority for solving...

Perhaps integrate this within the notifications page, Like how Twitter is currently working showing tweets have it show the posts from people and if you click on the name it shows there recent pages... i know this seems quite complicated to do but would be nice to have it like that.

@Guardeep409 I'd love to have something like that in Jolla / SailfishOS ;)

@cquence@jjaone You could consider copying your question text as an answer, and forming a question which is a question. Now you've kind of anwered already in your question.

@simo I re-wrote the question title, but IMHO it is pretty ckear that we want a native facebook client that works seamlessly with Feeds screen, and system notifications, also with photo sharing, private and group messaging features. There is a tag 'feature-request' that also indicates that this feature is nissing from SailfishOS currently.

@simo My comment tries to communicate that this is actually needed, and would make the usability of Jolla device much.'smarter' and easier to use with many.SoMe-services (here FB), and spesifically implemented so that it is integrated to system UI featurrs.

Hello !

As the developer of Friends for Sailfish, a Facebook client, I can answer about some of these feature requests. This is a rather tough problem because:

  1. Only Jolla can provide deep system integration (3rd developers don't have access to many API like application-plugins, or accounts yet)
  2. Only developers can do what they want with Facebook API (Jolla need to be sure that Facebook validates the implementation, so that they have the right to use the logo, the name etc.)

So I can develop a Facebook client, but it won't be as integrated as what Jolla is attempting to do. Jolla, in their side, needs approval, and my application, that might not be coherent with Facebook experience, might not get approved.

About the technical side now, there are other problems. To prevent people doing bad things with their API (like stalking an user's friends, or stealing data), Facebook API is very limited. The homescreen feed, for instance, is a pain to use and so limited, that you don't really get a decent experience from a 3rd party Facebook client.

Messaging API too, is limited, since the XMPP based one prevent group chatting, and with the graph-based one, you don't have a chat like experience (you have to pull data from servers, it is not pushing).

So basically, complex question. Hope it got solved one day.

Thanks for the answer abt the complexities of inplementing this. If I remember correctly there is somewhat overlapping question here abt FB in SailfishOS (cause I posted there a link to your Friends-app work. Thanks for your efforts, and let's hope we'll some day get a decent SoME-experience in Jolla with at least core features of FB and Twitter etc usable and integrated to system features.

Feel free to mark other Facebook questions as duplicates of this one. Thanks in advance.

@Sfiet_Konstantin:Thanks for your input and efforts! It is nice to see Friends ported over to SailfishOS and i am hoping you will be able to add more features over time.

I do understand the technical difficulties and challenges involved in 3rd party development and the fact that only Jolla can provide deep system integration.I am not suggesting which route is best, the original post was more about "logging" a request about a nicely integrated facebook client.

@cquence, and you are right. I'm just giving an input about why it is not already done, and about the fact that you can use alternatives right now (Friends, or Facebook for Android)

I knew I had seen this somewhere and after a bit of searching on youtube I found this video: http://youtu.be/S_ubaNocnlg?t=2m

So, can anyone answer why this feature got removed?

Further you can see traces of the facebook integration by looking on your own uploaded photos in Gallery. There you have the possibility to read and write comments.

"So, can anyone answer why this feature got removed?" ...yes please! And further, what's happening? Is this still in planning or does it never come back because Facebook doesn't allow it? I don't need this notification screen the way it is used right now. If there is no content > no need for an overview. Even if I get 10 mails in the same minute, I still don't need the notification screen. In my opinion, get there some feeds back in or remove it / recycle this gesture for something else.

Why don't Jolla take Friends and integrate it into Sailfish? Or they hire Sfiet and let him do it. :-)

Did you notice that there was already an Answer by @Sfiet_Konstantin about the Friends app and it's development? This non-Answer should have been posted there as a comment, don't you think..

foss4ever ( 2014-02-05 03:01:01 +0300 )edit

Yes, I read it. Sfiet talks about how Jolla and he are facing different problems in developing a FB client for Sailfish. He is not talking about working together. I am making a suggestions how to go about it. If that is for some reason undesirable or not possible, he, you and Jolla are free to say so :-)
